must confess i haven't heard any of those above. heard samples of #1 and i've liked the zomby tracks i heard on martyn's fabric mix. interested in hearing #8 as i dig his work with SY but haven't heard his solo stuff.

i only bought one record from the entire 100.

I wish I liked the Linkwood album... the cover art would look great on my wall.

All I have are the Animal Collective and Fever Ray albums. Makes me feel like I didn't branch out much in 2009. lol!

But it sounds like I'm not the only one puzzled by the top 100.

From this year's list I've bought -

#1. Leyland Kirby - Sadly, The Future Is No Longer What It Was

#4. Thomas Köner - La Barca

#18. Kreng - L'Autopsie Phénoménale De Dieu

#28. Ben Frost - By The Throat

#40. TU M' - Monochromes Vol. 1

#48. William Basinski - 92982

#51. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion

#53. Alva Noto - Xerrox Vol.2

#64. Stephan Mathieu & Taylor Deupree - Transcriptions

It's been a cracking good year for the old 'Modern Classical / Ambient' genre (as Boomkat class it).

One foot ahead of the other? that zomby album is quite terrible, his worst work . I liked his 'where were you in 92' lp until i found out it was a direct ripoff of doormouse's side project Glowstyx on Cock Rock disco even down to the cover art concept (you guys heard of this?)

The jim o' rourke was good, can't say i agree with the Vaino inclusion in the top 10 either. That album was pretty good as it was ridiculously over hyped. As cool as Boomkat is this list seems pretty predictable, its the stuff that probably sold the best for them during the year. Nice to see 2562 - Unbalance & DAM FUNK - Toeachizown, but again pretty predictable list. For a taste maker music store their 'tastes' get more obvious and coincide with best sellers even more over time.

that Leyland Kirby seems interesting, 4 hours long eh? its hard to make out what its going to be like based on the samples.

anybody want to buy my copy of Alva Noto - Xerrox Vol.2 ? I accidentally bought it at ameoba thinking it was going to have beats.

If you go onto the mp3 page of that album then you can listen to every track mostly (as some of the tracks are >15 minutes) in their entirety

Woah there ... You're getting rid of Xerrox Vol.2 ?! It's probably my album of the year, tracks like Xerrox Soma, Xerrox Sora and Xerrox Monophaser 2 are some of the most beautiful tracks I've heard in years

I feel like ive been in a bunker this year, ive heard nothing but a bunch of records made between the mid 50's and the mid 80's. Gonna download some of these so I can sound knowledgeable at the various diner parties I attend.

Glowstyx were Bong Ra.

i've never found the Raster noton take on ambience to be very interesting , i can totally understand the love for it , it's just not my thing. i just got an offer for the CD via PM awkward (before you said that) so if that doesn't go through ill bring it to you at the next show i see you at. MCbpete, don't be too saddened by my dislike of Xerrorx, i am VERY hard to please these days with any new ambient/drone music. I haven't heard anything that has really tickled my ambient bone besides the new Tetsu Inoue (probably the only person making ambient post 2004 that i love). Whenever i hear this praise heaped on people like Tim Hecker, William Basinksi or other new popular figures in ambient i get pretty confounded and have not yet found one release by them that makes me realize 'oh ok this is why people talk about these guys so much'

Glowstyx were Bong Ra.

thanks for the correction, but yeah anyone heard about this Glowstyx album? Zomby seems to have given his own career a nitrous boost by entirely ripping off Bong Ra's concept (even down to the cover art and LP title)

(1-2 years before Zomby's lp)
