Many forums, like somethingawful.com ($10 one time) and seobook.com ($300/month!), charge a price for membership.

WATMM has always been free to sign up for, but recently I've been thinking we could solve a lot of problems by charging $10 to join. We'd cut down on dupe accounts, trolls, and have enough income to put the download library back online.

Existing members wouldn't be charged anything, this would only apply to new signups.

Also, let's assume these new accounts came with all the features of an EKT account (currently $20/year).

Thoughts?

I paid to be made EKT since watmm's taken a solid place in my daily routine, but i wouldn't have paid a dime when i tentatively joined spurred on by an already subscribed friend on this board.

Make what you will of that.

edit: i voted 5 bucks though

new people will never pay it. this place is not internet wide by something awful. also if you did this i believe joyrex would have to give a shit what his members think. voluntary donation is entirely different.

I dont know, but it seems like charging to post here for the first time would only allow for the most desperate noobs to enter into the community, which doesnt exactly allow for the best and brightest.

not to mention i dont think theyd appreciate being chastised first thing after paying money for entry

EDIT: PAPER PLEASE COMRADE

From my experience, there is really little money in a small line of google ads at the bottom of the page. But can't see how a pay-to-register would actually help the site. Seen lot of -20 posts users that just push some great stuff they've been involved in once and a while. Why would they pay €5 for that?

I didn't know you guys were that low on cash. I'll throw in a donation when my Paypal fills up.

EDIT: You could limit access to the downloads section though. As an extra incentive and to save bandwidth. But I guess the main problem is storage cost these days.

Paying to support a forum you are active on is one thing.

Paying to enter/sign up? No way.

Unfortunately, we didn't get rid of the ads - they got rid of us!

Who says I don't already? Just because I don't take everything into consideration (and act upon it) does not mean I don't "give a shit".
