Rapidshare changing to usage-based and charging rent

not trying to influence anyone to use this service, and this will probly cost them some customers. RS is one of the largest filesharing systems in the world now, and hence becoming a bigger target for prosecution. Seems their CEO didn't agree so he "parted ways" with them, anyway their new head team has decided to make this a pay as you go service, using "rapids" whatever the fuck those are as currency, and trying to look legit in the process. It's a big fuck you to their long term customers (as I am one) who have prepaid for service, and will now be limited to the lame payment scheme they have come up with for outstanding prepaid balance. They will also be charging daily rent now for premium users to keep files on their servers, so it's a double whammy to the people who made this company rich. I thought this was newsworthy bc I can see the other biggies; MU, Sharingmatrix, Depositfiles, Filefactory etc etc going this route if it's successful. Looks like the party is over.

"As of June 29, 2010, RapidShare is changing its product and payment models. In future, the costs for RapidShare accounts will no longer be tiered according to time period; instead there will be five packages with differing features. These packages will be paid for with a new currency known as "Rapids". In order to grant our customers maximum flexibility when choosing the type of package, they will be able to switch between packages on a daily basis and hence select the features that suit them best at the time.

All previous Collector's accounts will be automatically converted into free Premium accounts on July 1, 2010, thus making it still possible to use the RapidShare service without charge."

usenet

how use it for free:

sabnzbd+

just4today.net (not sure what the max speed is with this free server)

nzbmatrix (though seems to be down) + binsearch

won't be much of a loss if rapidshare explodes. if i'm trying to grab something big i pray to jesus that it's on megaupload.

This... I got a deal from atraweb, $10 a month for their usual $15 package... unlimited download plus 680 day retention... and it saturates my 30mbps connection. It's always fast, never a wait, and the safest way to be a pirate on the net. Quite nice since I stopped paying $25 a month for cable and instead just download everything for $10.

for non-illegal sharing purposes, use dropbox.

it's fucking awesome.

it basically syncs a folder on your local machine with their servers. drop something in it and it's online. you have a public folder which can generate hyperlinks. Don't want the file to be online anymore? Delete your local copy.

Then there are closed, shared folders which will be synced with collaborators of yours etc.. no maintenance. It integrates nicely with your OS.

so.. depending on how you use your computer, the following might or might not blow your mind. It involves another fantastic tool, Launchbar, but the online part is done by dropbox:

say, i want to share an image file which is located on my desktop. what do i do?

1. i select the file.

2. on the keyboard, i hit ctrl, s, d, enter.

3. there is no step 3.

a direct link to the file has been copied to the clipboard like so: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1358257/Screen%20shot%202010-06-27%20at%2011.28.16%20PM.png

how does that work?

on a selected file, if i hit ctrl i tell Launchbar that i want to do something with the file. s, d is a shortcut for a script named "send to dropbox". This script will put a copy of the selected file into the dropbox public folder, generate the link and copy it to the clipboard.

the reason this sucks, like has been said, is that rapidshare has so much fucking shit on it. You can search it for things, and with a premium account you can download all day long.

I for one would be sad to see rapidshare go. I've had an account for years, it is still very widely used, so much apps, movies and games available. Newsgroups are great for recent releases, but it isn't much of an archive due to it's limited retention. Rapidshare has even more shitty retention, but there are a surprising number of people willing to reup when links go down. But well, 1 july is also the date my data limit gets dropped. So I'll have to built my ratio at KG I guess.

Thankfully my paid account expires soon after this goes into effect.

Mediafire is nice. I already have a free account with them, might be time to start giving them some actual money.

Well I'm glad I only renewed for a short amount last time, I felt the end was nigh, a lot of links are dead these days.

I'll be interested to try out the rapids thing just to see what its like, but if it sucks I will have to move to mega share or something.

Wouldn't mind seeing a poll on where people who are with rapid would go.

I think Mega shares for my vote.

wow, that didn't take long. i kept thinking to myself all week "this dumbass company just fucked themselves out of business".

From Rapidshare-

"Dear user,

As a result of the recent adjustments to our product and pricing model we have received a lot of feedback from our users. There was also positive response but we want to be honest with you: most answers were negative. With our adjustments we have alienated many users. As a matter of course, that was not our intention. Instead, it is our goal to introduce a system that gives you more flexibility. However, we are happy about every single user response that we have received as this is the only way we can learn what our users really want. That is the reason why we have fundamentally revised our offer one more time and made it much simpler."

basically they're going back to a fixed rate for 30gb of traffic per month, and 10gb of storage.
