Rent an allotment or do some competitive sport, some of you people really need a hobby. Apocalyptic prophets have been crying since the dawn of time, usually involving some sort of mental illness that compels the poor bastard to stand outside a train station with a sandwich board.

think of the world pre-1950s... way worse for the most part.

Really? I think we have passed our prime.

Did people really have it that bad? They mostly had great communities and causes (regardless if they were meaningful or not, they spurred community spirit). We don't have jack shit. Making life consist of a career and buying shit wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for all the fucking isolationism.

Yeah I think post-cold war people can never understand what it was like during the coldwar, or living in a world without the nuclear bomb.

There isn't anyone on this board who can understand what it was like living in a world without the nuclear bomb. As to the bit about living pre-1950s, yes, there might have been more of a community. It's what having that community meant, I'm not so clear on, as there were still wife-beaters, rapists, murderers, child-abusers, alcoholics, drug users in every community. People just turned a blind eye and whispered about it behind each others' backs.

The 1950's were a golden age if you were middle-class, white, male, heterosexual, and Christian. The above demograph got so used to being privileged and entitled that some of them actually interpret the modern push towards equality in terms of gender, race and beliefs as persecution.

people turned a blind eye maybe and that is a good point twiddle makes, but you could let your kid run around the cities back then and he probably wouldn't get abducted, raped and murdered.

stop profit on money lending (was outlawed before Henry VIII) and get rid of tax havens so everyone has to account for the amount they have

proper population control

eat grain protien instead of meat so the whole world has enough to eat

take away religious power from lawful legislation

and the world will be a better place

"In the future the world is perfect. Everybody takes Soma. Everybody is happy. Everybody is nice. Everybody is orderly and composed. Everybody has sex every day. No violence, no problems, no feelings. Manufactured in tubes and divided by IQ, humans are produced as either an Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta or Epsilon. Alphas are tall, good-looking and smart. Epsilons short, zombielike and moronic. This new civilization lives in sheltered domes, spread around the globe, that provide them with every comfort and necessity they require, most barely aware of, others intrigued by the savage, brutal world outside, each performing the daily tasks programmed into them from birth." -Brave new world :cerious:

more than everything mentioned in the OP, what scares me the most is that i haven't got to know the world before all this. none of us here, actually.

we were born and we will die while all this shit is happening. and we are just going through the beginning...

i think it's unfair to say that you could let your kids roam around freely before the 1950s and cities were safe. all the major cities had brutal crimes (never mind the gang wars of the prohibition era), we've just seen a lot more urban growth in the past 6 decades and hence a lot more urban problems. There is absolutely nothing new about urban crime.

There's less crime, there's just more exposure. I don't believe for a second that it was safer before than now.

In this country at least, statistically there's been a steady decrease in crime for years. But if you say that to people who take tabloids dead serious they reply with something like "It's because people aren't reporting crime anymore!" (I've actually heard this said a lot)

By looking back into the history we can see patterns of behavior that have been even more emphasized during the last decades. It's quite noticeable that we're somehow merging everything we know about. Which is good in a way, but what we actually get is a mass form of simplified average that serves as a reference of common consensus about knowledge, society (or what future plans and decisions are being derived from if you like), rather than being merely an indication of where our paths are going wrong and the directions that need to be fixed. Sort of a buffer...

My point is that we are not that very advanced, compared to the times of the ancient Rome or Greece, if we only take into the account what we are as a species, how we identify ourselves, and what is our common purpose on this planet. By that I don't mean any of the same-old religious crap they're fighting about for thousands of years. What we perfected in our minds as a society are just workarounds to the very same goals that narrow-aspirated minds choose to employ/follow right from the first ideas about politics and society. Such people get power and don't think of the consequences, not even taking into the equation all of the necessary variables... Like someone already posted above, I mean famine, poverty, opression, heavy industry that harms us the most, etc...

And the peak of the humanity's zeitgeist, the pinnacle of its egoism and feeling of superiority, lies in the commonly mistaken fact that we have grown so big in terms of consumption and pollution, that we actually believe we are 'hurting' nature. Actually we are tipping-off the balance that allows our existence. And if we tip it off too much, chaos will destroy the equilibrium, and we will be forced to adapt or face extinction. This is no 2012 apocalypse rattle - it's a thought, based on scientific facts and common sense.

i consider the greeks to have been nearly perfect when compared to our modern civilization or any other one.

they lived in balance with nature in a way that no other following civilization did, they created the concept of politics, specifically democracy, and applied it, they established the foundations of architecture, whose main ideas are present in nearly every contemporary building we can land our eyes in. there is balance, beauty and spirituallity in everything they have done. and they had advanced technology too.

unfortunately romans put an end to ancient greece in their quest for global domination and absolute power.

we act as romans everyday and we have done that for centuries now.

i still don't believe how all this sustainability and environmental crisis is proclaimed as nature being damaged. we are simply damaging ourselves.

nature can't be damaged. it will always recover.

i am sure greeks knew that.

I believe something significant will happen in 2012. I don't necessarily think the entire world will be destroyed, or anything like that, I'm kind of more inclined towards the spiritual predictions. Whatever happens, I'm sure it will be big. As the guy quoted in my signature said, I'm relying on something going down, because I don't really have any long-term plans with my life, and I can't really see how my current life could ever get much better, realistically.
