Cassette walkmans prices skyrocket.

I remember a few years back I could go down Argos and get a cassette walkman by Alba for £3.

Why is it now that the prices have more than trippled? Is there something I'm missing?

Had a look on ebay and the cheapest one I saw was £8. And in the listing:-

No headphones included. Radio works fine. Cassette mechanism makes a noise but doesn't turn tape.

WTF?

Just waiting for minidiscs to increase tenfold to sell a spare 10 pack of recordables.

Anyway I'm thinking of converting my old tapes to mp3 now as I haven't the facility to listen to them. Is this a good idea or will I get bored easily?

I believe this is all apart of the hipster movement. Its ironic to still listen to tapes, which makes it cool.

Beware of anyone who wears women pants and has huge hair. These are the people who are messing up the walkman economy.

WTF indeed, walkman prices are the same as they always were here in Seattle. The goodwill always has a few of them for around 2-7 bucks depending on how fancy the shit looks. The $2 ones work fine.

I like cassettes. They're cheap as shit, disposable, and I can find loads of bizarre old home-recorded stuff to sample on them. Vinyl is way too expensive and nobody puts their sermons, telephone calls, or weird childhood raps on wax anyway. Tapes fulfill my audio voyeurism needs. :cisfor:

edit: Also, I've been recording on cassettes since I was five. No need to stop now.

i realized this exact same thing last week when i wanted to buy a walkman because i've started buying tapes from a cassette-only ambient / drone label. i didn't want to spend money on a good tape deck if i'm only gonna have 10 - 15 tapes. ironically, best buy had the lowest price on a decent sony walkman.

i have a couple of walkmans. i don't know why anyone would want one. tapes sound like shit. i guess if you really need to hear some cassette only forty minute drone release that requires the fetishism of a collectible to be worth buying, maybe. it's just really odd when people argue all day about mp3 files degrading music and then turn around and release on a medium with really low fidelity because it's trendy and creates immediate demand.
