You can only police it so far before you start dragging people out of wheelchairs as in the Big Lebowski I agree. I will admit I'm on EBT benefits (food stamps) and in no way do I feel I'm undeserving of it, in fact it's kinda saving me right now... I'm in college and I started renting a house this summer with 4 roommates this summer because it's actually cheaper than living in the dorms. Rent costs $160 a month, and that covers NONE of the utilities. I have a job, I work about 25-30 hours a week busting my ass at a gas station/full liquor store/video casino... I can't really get more hours and I'm probably only going to work 20 hours a week during the school year. Pretty much all my money goes towards the house, wether it be rent, bills, or the little things we need to keep the place from becoming a shithole (paper towels, garbage bags, tp, etc). Without these benefits I could barely afford to feed myself (I know this cause I had to do it for a month, living off crackers, dollar store ramen, and maybe lunch meat etc... it sucked and I was hungry all the time). Getting on the EBT benefits was a HUUUUUUUGE weight off my shoulders, and allows me to live a little more comfortably not having to worry about being able to afford to feed myself and pay all my bills. Occasionally I buy a couple grams a time of weed to smoke... and god damn if I didn't spend a little every now and then so I could relax with a bowl when I really need it, I'd probably snap. W A T M M (which translates to: know-it-all-but-know-fuck-all) so what, most people work 9 - 5, or more usually 9 - 5.30 (or whatever combination of 8 - 9 hours a day you care to mention for that matter). that's full time. i don't care about the official definition of full or part time, i'm not arguing over that, just that messaien's definition of full time might mean he's in for a nasty surprise if he ever gets a job. know-it-all-but-know-fuck-all by posting this you're kind of asserting that you in fact, do know know it all, which is contradictory to the point of posting it in the first place. I don't think it is contentious that 9-5 weekdays is generally considered full time, and yes most people do at least another half an hour per day on top of that in office jobs. Shift work is slightly different though because they will deduct lunch breaks from your hours and they tend to refer to full time from anything over 4 days a week, even with some short shifts. I always considered that weasel words to make you feel like you are in a full time job while avoiding a guarantee of too many hours. The 'know fuck all' comment seems a touch ridiculous And as for temp work, I personally signed up with 5 or so agencies one summer and was prepared to do anything, have catering/customer service/cleaning experience, am a well spoken white male with rippling pecs etc and I didn't get offered anything. keltoi Posted August 17, 2011 Author Share Posted August 17, 2011 people in this thread will hate me, im on benifits simply because it works out to be more profitable than working. full time work week = about 30-35hrs x £6 so 180-200 quid, then deduct tax to leave 160 a weekish. now consider the dole with housing and council tax benefit, 50 pound per week, plus 300 per month for rent, plus free council tax, plus the ability to work 15 hours a week legally, and also do cash in hand flyering work. so, 50 from the dole 70 from the housing 100 from the 15 hours 50-60 from the flyering = about 260, no tax applies due to the dole. this also leaves me plenty of time to get on with my music, excersize, and socialising. only a stupid person would work in that situation. i think only a stupid person would happily stay in that kind of situation... a good friend of mine, with 2 first class degrees, has lived exactly like this for over 15 years. he gets benefits, housing benefits and he puts up gigs posters for cash-in-hand and sells a bit of weed. is he happy? is he fuck. he is stuck in a rut and depressed. he can never afford to come out for a pint, go to a gig, see a movie, bring along some food to a bbq, go on holiday, keep a car running, pay for fuel, go snow-boarding, buy clothes, computer, etc. all he does is sit in his smelly flat and accepts cast-offs and old things from friends... like when i got a new computer i gave him my old one. his dad got a new car and gave him his old one, which he left to rot cos he couldn't afford road tax. another mate got new snow board and gave him his old one, but he never comes cos he can't afford to chip in with petrol money or lift pass. people give him clothes, everything, and he continues to take, take, take. needless to say i don't see him often any more cos i gave up asking him to do stuff and got fed up paying for things for him. i have tried to help him get on courses and even got him work but he couldn't be arsed and it's hard when he doesn't seem to want to help himself. I know what I'd rather do... £30 / 8hrs = £3.75 per hour dunno if you've ever done labouring, but it's usually just worked out on a flat daily rate - it's probably much more than £30 a day as I have repeatedly said - in London I think it's around £100 a day for labourers for example, but I wanted to cover all possibilities and maybe in some places you won't get paid that great - but at least you're getting paid something you have worked for. what do you do for work LUDD? I would gladly go on the dole for a limited period if the other option was being paid badly for horrible thankless work. After a year or so I think I'd probably gladly clean toilets, although to be fair when I used to clean toilets I never really cleaned them, I just flushed a lot and poured bleach somewhere near them and stole toilet paper. Posted August 17, 2011 Share Posted August 17, 2011 benefits aren't specifically for entertainment, no, but honestly man, how can you expect someone to become a productive member of society if they have literally no bright spot in their life? i dont get it when people bitch about poor people on welfare who have tvs. omg they have a tv. they can unwind and watch some shitty show and maybe not think about their miserable life for a little, relax, build up a supply of energy which will be much needed to face the next shitty day of their miserable existence. poor people are people too, and people need creature comforts. like tv. or pot. its like people have this idea that poor folks should do nothing but work like slaves until they are no longer poor and THEN they can relax a bit which just does not jive with the current socioeconomic system we have in place. i mean really when you boil it down, there's an inverse correlation between unemployment and inflation, so these benefits leeches are keeping the value of your money up. thank them!
