i keep having this dreams where i listen to some fictional bands i have never heard of and the songs i hear are fucking SICK! i wake up and when i realise that the songs i heard i had made up myself. so when i rush to get my camera to record the vocals and melodies and leave a note on what synths/vocoders i use (takes me about two minutes) i've forgotten it. what the fuck am i going to do?

maybe if you actually could reproduce them they'll probably sound like shit, it's always like that with dreams...

i dunno i think i've seen it in some movie or someone around here had a similar experience, realizing that irl it sounded very different from the dream...

Paul McCartney supposedly wrote Yesterday because he had dreamt it up. All you have to do to be rich for the rest of your life is to write one single song out of your dreams.

I had a dream about work. So I worked twelve hours, dwelled on the experience for a couple of hours while i ate, and then i fell asleep and dreamt about it. I'd rather dream about a good song.

I have managed to pick up a few melodies from my dreams and hypnagogic states. One thing I've noticed is that they are usually simple melodies that sound great because your brain is pumping itself full of magic pixie dream chemicals. In other words, they aren't as great as they sound.

I heard Neil Young say somewhere that if he hears a tune in his dream, he gets up and immediately records some version of it, no matter what time it is.

I think even if the final product doesn't truly represent the original tune, than at least you captured a glimpse of it.

take the general mood/feel/atmosphere of the dream music and work with that... much easier than trying to reproduce the tunes exactly. i've made two EPs this way, and they're some of my favorites

in one dream there was this trance beat with a woman singing "Take me where the stars shine, where the stars shine so bright" over and over. And I was really liking it, in the childish wistful kind of way. Then, in the dream, it turned out to be the DVD menu music for a video about movie stars. And the song was interrupted with a commentator saying, "Welcome to the Celebrity Stars DVD, where the stars shine so bright." It was weirdly anticlimactic. I've always wanted to put that in a song.

this actually happened to me recently too. i went to an Aphex concert but he was playing a song i never heard from him before (dream). i realized that it was something that i came up with so i woke myself up and tried to remember the song. i played all the parts in my head over and over again. but unfortunately it made me sleepy and i fell back asleep. when i woke up i completely forgot the song. really i think what would be a good idea is get a recording device and keep it next to your bed. then when you dream of a song hum and make notes and stuff about what the song sounds like. that might be the best way cause youll be doing it on the spot instead of thinking about what synth or whatever to use, which actually will make you forget other parts faster.

Lol great thread. I once had a dream of some weird still life scene with a fountain pen and a blue line and some weird mirror shit. I then reproduced it with blender (3d software) which was quite fun to do but it looked like shit.

perhaps richard is sprinkling amnesia fairy dust on some of your eyes, the tunes i wrote didn't get made or recorded until weeks after having the dreams that inspired them and it was still pretty easy to recall. get it together watmm.

I once slept with headphones on, and in my dream I heard the same music, but it kept playing when I put my (dream) headphones of. Then I tried everything (turning the radio off and on, washing my ears, etc) to get the music away, but it didn't go. Very annoying :P Other than that I don't really dream of music.

I do find myself with a melody (really simple, only 5 or 6 notes mostly) stuck in my head that I've never heard before. Or maybe it's more like a beat, with notes instead of drum sounds.

Wasn't there something with rdj (or some other idm star) and amnesia?
