The Drexciyan 'Harnessed The Storm' Saga

Recommended Posts

Posted

For the better part of the day, I've been reading bits and pieces of this internet archive page:

http://drexciyaresearchlab.blogspot.nl/2005/05/drexciya-speaks.html

A nice, rounded collection of Drexciyan quotes about music, the process of it and the Drexciyan Attitude. Good read.

Anyway, I came up to some interesting quotes which peaked my interest. It concerns the Storms series

"Harnessed The Storm is an ongoing process that consists of seven storms (albums) released around the world. So far three of the seven storms have hit earth (Drexciya, Transllusion, The Other People s Place). The next four storms are in a holding pattern." **

Holding pattern? Sounds interesting. Sounds like they're in the pipeline, ready to be released. Later on, these suspicions seem to be confirmed:

“Those two particular records(Transllusion, Other People Place), those two groups, are a part of storms of "Harnessed the Storm" Drexciya LP. All together there are seven LPs, which I call storms. So far you have The Other People Place, Transllusion, and you have Drexciya s "Harnessed The Storm", which is the first one. There’s no particular order that they’re going to be released in. The records are already done. Right now, storm number four is due up next to blow up off the coast of Portugal, which means that’s another record label I’m dealing with. There are certain reasons why I deal with certain record labels, because I want to see what’s going to happen, or whatever. In other words, all the record labels that I dealt with had different strengths and there’s a particular reason why I deal with them. After that, there’s going to be three more storms. They re already ready and they re just waiting to come down the line.” ******

.. But I haven't heard anything of Drexciya since 2002, except for some remastered versions by Clone (+ some extra tracks) pretty recently: no whole big albums or anything, otherwise I'd've known.

So my question of this topic: does anyone know anything about this? rumours?

A saga as grant as the Storms series being completed is something I am willing to see, by Neptune!

Damn, a quick search gave me this:

Order of Storms

The most obvious unanswered question about the Drexciya storm series is that instead of the oft stated 7 storms there were in fact 8 records released between 2001 and 2002 which could be considered as storms.
Using information from James Stinson interviews and the few records that stated their number in the series its quite clear that Drexciya’s Grava 4 is the odd one out. At first I thought this had to be part of the series, if not the eye of the storm itself. However, once you know that this is the first post storm album its very exciting to see where they get to with their concept.
For now though I will simply list the order of storms.

1. DREXCIYA - HARNESSED THE STORM
2. TRANSLLUSION - THE OPENING OF THE CEREBRAL GATE
3. THE OTHER PEOPLE PLACE - LIFESTYLES OF THE LAPTOP CAFÉ
4. ABSTRACT THOUGHTS - HYPOTHETICAL SITUATIONS
5. LAB RAT XL - MICE OR CYBORG
6. TRANSLLUSION - L.I.F.E.
7. SHIFTED PHASES - THE COSMIC MEMOIRS OF THE LATE GREAT RUPERT J. ROSINTHROPE

James Stinson died in 2002, so I have to assume that Drexciya isn't releasing anything anymore.

The Transllusion stuff is really strange isn't it? Especially L.I.F.E., I'm really intrigued by that one.

What has Gerald Donald been up to recently, btw?

Last was a collab with DJ Stingray - NRSB - Commodified that was a brilliant mix between old Urban Tribe and later Dopplereffekt type stuff. He also did a few totally overpriced and way too short Der Zyklus / Dopplereffekt EP's.

Coincidentally I was just listening to my L.I.F.E. 12", haven't heard that in a while. I remember how I hated that one first... what was I thinking?!

What I wonder is, James Stinson told in his first/last radio interview (in 2001) that he has a nice stockpile of unreleased tracks left for when he would die. Now we have seen some cool unreleased pre-1999 Drexciya tracks released by Clone recently, but what about Storm tracks? There must be some absolute gold in there still unreleased...

This doesn't sync with Stinson's words as there is no portuguese release (UK, Netherlands & Germany), also two Transllusion are kinda off-concept. I think we don't have all of them.

edit: or, he meant just Europe in general and Portugal coast as a Drexciyan aquatic point or whatever.

That unreleased music was probably Transllusion, Shifted Phases, Lab Rat XL that got released around/after his death. I imagine.

Checked on this:

"Cisco was born to Portuguese parents on the island of Madeira (Portugal). His family moved to London (1975) when he was five years old, setting the stage for his musical career."

The label is from UK. But it sounds believable that Stinson could mess up on this as being portuguese.

I wouldn't call it him messing up, just giving a subtle clue where to look back in the day. He didn't want to elaborate or flat-out just tell about all the Storm albums, where and how they´d be released etc.

Yeah depends how you view Stinson's image, also noticed that on Lab Rat XL cover there is a note saying "This album is the 7th and last storm from Drexciya. R.I.P. James Stinson", so i guess my version is likely to be false.

What has Gerald Donald been up to recently, btw?

I'll check that out, thanks!

I just remembered that for a while Dopplereffekt/Japanese Telecom, etc. and to a lesser extent the Drexciyan waves were associated (by the music press, but people bought into it, actually that's how I came to know about these projects) with "electroclash". Listening to them now it seems so stupid and unlikely, I don't know how that made sense to anyone back then... but at any rate it speaks volumes of how G.D. really isn't bullshitting when he talks about the conceptual integrity of what he does: electroclash faded into techtonik shit and then into brostep while Dopplereffekt still is original and true. Modernistic honesty pays off.

These projects were released on International Deejay Gigolo, label by german's superstar DJ Hell, so there's nothing strange they were marketed like that. To be precise, there was some foundation for "smart" electroclash in early Dopplereffekt, all these "i want to be a pornostar", "we need to sterilize the population" glam aesthetics

I'm a huge fan of the storm series, The 7 albums plus if you include Grava 4, makes it an insanely epic suite of 8 albums.

One interesting (or sad) thing to do is check out the original ride dimensional waves geocities site he made himself

http://web.archive.org/web/20030409042303/http://www.geocities.com/ridedimensionalwaves/1.htm

-It's cool to see some of the storm series albums listed together when at the same time people were still speculating on if those albums were related at all

-"Also Coming soon, Deepfits, The on line clothing site for Drexciya Gear"

-For an artist prizing their secrecy so much, it was weird he listed his address in Georgia.

-Isophlux records being listed as a label even though it seems they never released anything Drexciya related.
