  1. if you have a droid/milestone, root that shit and overclock it. i got my milestone from the stock 550mhz to 1100mhz, stable, with no battery life problems. plus i enabled JiT for another 50% speed boost. the phone is literally 3 times faster than when I bought it. clearly motorola crippled the thing so they could upsell "faster" phones down the line.
  2. Afrobeat only turns up 9 hits on watmm, so I figured I'd make this thread in celebration of one of the greatest musicians of all time, Fela Kuti. Fela Anikulapo Kuti (1938 — 1997), or simply Fela, was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist musician and composer, pioneer of Afrobeat music, and human rights activist. - Wikipedia Fela Kuti & Egypt 80 - CBB (Confusion Break Bones) [youtubehd]BBD2CXMBWQ4[/youtubehd] Deadi bodi geti accidenti. Yee pa! Confusion breaki boni. Yepa! Na double wahala for deadi bodi And the owner of deadi bodi Double wahala for deadi bodi... --- Fela Kuti was the mouthpiece of Nigerian counterculture in the 1970s. He developed a style of music known as Afrobeat - an amalgamation of Yoruba rhythms, Ghanaian Highlife, jazz, American funk and pidgin English. Fela loved getting up the nose of the authorities. He married 27 women in one day, publicly smoked marijuana despite the threat of prison, declared Kalakuta an independent state, and was often beaten up and imprisoned. ... He recounts the horrific story of the day in 1977 when soldiers under Olusegun Obasanjo's military regime stormed Fela's compound. Ironically, Fela and the recently retired president had grown up together in the town of Abeokuta, a few hours' drive from Lagos - Fela in a middle-class family, the son of a preacher, and Obasanjo in a poor farming family. Fela had released his record Zombie as a rebuke to the army, comparing them to robots, and his friends had burned an army motorcycle during one altercation. In retaliation, 1,000 of Obasanjo's soldiers surrounded Kalakuta. "Fela didn't know what was happening," Olayinka recalls. "The soldiers began to climb the fence, then they started shooting. Fela was inside the house but he jumped out of his compound and ran to his friend's house. Then the soldiers threw Fela's mother out of the window." Fela's mother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, was Nigeria's first feminist activist, and the first woman to drive a car in the country. She broke her hip in the fall and later died from her injuries. The original Kalakuta Republic was subsequently burned to the ground, but Fela's response was to move into a new house and place a coffin on its roof with a banner that read: "This is where justice was murdered." - The Guardian --- Fela Kuti & Egypt 80 - ODOO (Overtake Don Overtake Overtake) [youtubehd]Q2aArlIHnOU[/youtubehd] My friend wan come buy fan Him dey sweat for him dey sleep for room Him dey fall level of tree The fan na seventy-five naira My friend him dey follow salary Him dey try to save and save and save Every time he nearly buy the fan Government go add ten naira more Every time he nearly buy the fan Government go start one activity Till the fan reach two hundred naira My friend nearly die, he never die My friend he no wan die Die-die no dey for him dictionary For where? 3. [youtubehd]rur5k3BCSI8[/youtubehd] Short clip from Tokyo-Ga, by Wim Wenders, 1985. IMDB: 7.2/10 Very unique... little random pieces of Tokyo nostalgia mixed with stories and interviews about a filmmaker...
  4. everyone in this thread is wrong. here are the real facts:
  5. it's a great essay, imo. one of the most insightful things i've ever read about music. absolutely true. if you've ever tried to switch from say, software to hardware, you'll find out just how much your equipment influences your output. i moved from fl studio to ableton live, and suddenly found myself composing in entirely different genres.
  6. [youtubehd]fFI3OFsDUJM[/youtubehd] just wanted to say "seen enough?" is one of the best tracks of 2010.

    Bitcoin

the total number of bitcoins will be 21 million when they're all distributed. that graph shows the drop off in new coins being given out. eventually all 21 million will be in circulation, and after that, no more are being handed out.

    Bitcoin

the basic idea is this: 1. there's no inflation. there's a fixed number of coins in existence, and no more will ever be created. 2. digital signatures are used to sign and verify the coins, and it's impossible to create fake coins (baring a sudden, incredible advance in computing that would invalidate all encryption currently in use). 3. the coins have value because they can be exchanged for goods and services (just like paper money). the number of places you can spend them is slowly increasing. 4. spending the coins is as easy as sending someone a text file, and no third party or bank is required to exchange or store funds. since the government can't track or tax these transactions easily, they will want to stop this. the easiest way to do that is to write a law declaring 100% tax on bitcoin transactions, then set up sting operations: go to the biggest bitcoin shops, spend some coins, see if it gets reported as tax income. if not: tax evasion -> go to jail. a couple dozen busts like this, and no one running a legitimate business will want to accept bitcoins anymore.

i was looking at this a couple months ago... if it ever takes off, the government will just introduce a 100% tax on bitcoin income, and start setting up sting operations...

my grandfather chases them into a corner and stomps them to death. he's 72.
  14. anyone have those pics of squarepusher dressed as a turtle / in a turtle costume? they were scanned from a magazine interview a few years back. maybe 2006. roughly the same time as this image (possibly even from the same shoot): they don't seem to be on google, i've tried a few times with no luck.
  15. That aura simulation is pretty good. I've had this happen twice. I don't get a headache, though. Wikipedia calls it "Scintillating Scotoma". The first time, it was caused by using this really shitty florescent desk lamp for about 3 hours. The second time, I clicked some picture on Digg and it started immediately. I can't remember exactly what the picture was, sort of a black and white line drawing with a weird interference pattern. I guess it crashed my visual cortex or something. It's amazing how consistent the effects are; everyone seems to be drawing pretty much the same image.
  16. My Dad turns 50 this year. He still plays Tiger Woods, Final Fantasy X2, etc. Actually, he was saying they found the old NES and he went back and beat FF1 (the original) again. I'd say it's not really any different than more traditional hobbies, like chess or checkers.

  18. autoplaying should be fixed now. again, you'll have to resave your posts to update the code.
