the only golden globes I care about are in the nice tits thread. who gives a shit about hollywood asslick parties.

 

Ricky Gervais and Natalie Portman were there.

 

I would watch 4 straight hours of scat porn just to see them at the end.

i thought the score was mixed way too loud - the music was right in your face the whole time. The remix of "hall of the mountain king" was good though, for sure.

It was all new to me, since I haven't actively sought out any new reznor music in a donkey's age.

pretty sure you'll be disappointed, except for the track he did for Tetsuo: The Bullet Man

I thought it was a brilliant film and it's the best thing Treznor has done for years. More stuff like that please.

i thought the film was great, but the soundtrack was lazy. especially since it featured prominent use of Ghosts I-IV tracks. i don't give a shit if Fincher was using them as temp tracks and felt that nothing else fit, i think it was a lazy decision on Fincher's part and it should've been Reznor's job to say to him "hang on, it's a bit lazy to have me as the composer for the score and not use my services to their full potential - let me have a go at making something new to fit the scene".

 

interesting i've never heard anyone else mention this. and yeah that is kind of disappointing.

 

Did the Americans really get upset by Gervais hosting? I thought his opening monologue was hilarious.

that's what i'd heard anyways, at least about the whole temp tracks thing. either way, whether it's true or not, it's lazy as fuck to use anything from his previous body of work.

i thought the music fit the movie perfectly. and i've listened to ghosts and while some of the tracks are taken directly from it or remixed, not everything in the movie was on ghosts.

i say again, when you have the musician on board as the composer of the original score, it is lazy to use any music from his/her back catalogue. and certainly not as much as was used in The Social Network.

Yeah I believe it used 2 tracks from Ghosts all up, and they were remixes. 2 out of 19 is 'prominent'?

 

And FWIW, the anti-awards thing from the NIN camp is usually directed at the Grammy's.

sorry but the music completely made the vibe of the movie. if they had placed fast paced 80's music over the opening scene like they were originally going to it would have seemed like a college movie, and instead it has this very melancholy, slightly angry feeling to it that is completely in keeping with the character of mark zuckerberg. it's completely ridiculous to say it has NOTHING to do with the vibe of the movie.

I think it's more confusion as to why you are taking into consideration how much work was put into the soundtrack instead of simply whether or not it fits the the movie.

I didn't really have plans to search out any new reznor, last thing I liked of his really was the soundtrack to Lost Highway.

 

Anyways, I felt the music fit the movie well, it was just mixed too loud for my taste. I don't really think it's lazy to use past songs...maybe Fincher just felt that those tracks were really the best fit for the scenes they were used for...

the soundtrack itself i listen to a lot and really enjoy on its own. i dont think it's a perfect fit for the film though. even from the first scene, when the theme started, it seemed like it was trying too hard to create drama and tension. i think the film is really good, but not great. i dont like hall of the mountain king scene, i thought the whole scene was kind of out of place and disrupted the flow and vibe of the film. like a music video for the reznor/ross cover. just didnt quite make sense to me.

 

reznor and ross are doing the score to the american version of girl with the dragon tattoo next (directed by fincher). i'm looking forward to seeing how they score that and what they've all learned from working successfully on a project together. i think this is the perfect and most honest venue for reznor's music now. scoring film and doing it well. i'm excited and happy for him. regarding laziness in using older material-- i tend to disagree. i can see a director hearing a song, having a vision, and not wanting to compromise that vision, accepting nothing less than the source material that inspired him. then build on the score from there-- which is what i imagine happened.

Girl with the dragon tattoo for Fincher's next project makes me very sad. :sad: Will he ever do a scifi or horror again? and no Zodiac is not a horror movie

 

and generally speaking Reznor is known to reuse or slightly modify motifs from earlier songs. At least half the songs on the Fragile sound like they are referencing melodies from the Downward Spiral. i dont really see anything wrong with it. but it would take me out of the movie uncontrollably if i recognized them. Good example, i saw Truman Show before i saw Powaqqatsi . The fact that truman show used the main cue from Powaqqatsi, made it almost impossible for me to enjoy Powaqqatsi without thinking of the Truman Show. I don't think i'm the only one who's this sensitive to this phenomenon. So i can understand nitpicking it for recycling material from Ghosts, since Ghosts is my favorite NIN album since Further down the spiral, it would be distracting for me if i noticed it being played in the movie.
