Seems like a very overlooked film. Yeah, for me it's sort of both the definitive holocaust film and one of the definitive coming of age films, too. Too bad it kind of faded from film memory, but that makes it more of an undiscovered gem. Though I haven't seen it for a long time, there's another film that kind of reminds me of Europa Europa that could have been on my list - Before the Rain. An odd film that somehow captures that blend of the surreal and very real nature of real life. I guess those are the sorts of films I like the most, like Herzog, the blend of the documentary aspect of real life, with the absurdity and surreality. Funny because I typically detest so-called magical realism, but I totally get Herzog's notion of "ecstatic truth", down to the core of my being.
