Oh wow, I feel so loved. Thanks guys.

Anyway, I think the most important thing said in this topic was this:

it's not a bad thing to enjoy extremely derivative art.

its not a personal attack awe..you know better than that.

after reading some of the responses, i got heated, and then started thinking out a meticulous response that would expose all minutiae of what you are claiming against this guy...but then i realized, this is pointless.

so yeah you guys. you are right.

I defended Tycho's album after it came out, even after the guy came across as phony and defensive in that flame war (was it on xltronic? I though it was watmm). In any case, I find all his stuff - graphic design, music - good, but too polished. Very commercial, if not cynical. I think it's the fact that he's commercializing an aesthetic that is supposed to be anti-commercial that is the most galling aspect. BoC (or at least their image) is about shunning the spotlight and making very personal art in a non-commercial way (and needless to say, the popular movements in the 60s and 70s were about personal freedom which had an element of anti-commercialism). Yet Tycho seems to be all about self-promotion and slickness. IF you can get past this, and just focus on the music, then none of the rest really matters.

Personally, I think while his music had become less-BoC like over time, it has become more repetitive, self-referential, and plain boring. It sounds to me like he's still repeating the musical ideas from his first album, just refining them a bit. I think the Flashbulb comparison is pretty spot-on.

i like to use the term 'artisan' to describe musicians like Tycho. It's the same word i would use to describe a wood carving craftsmen who is extremely great at making the same kind of chair over and over again

that's spot-on. while yes, boards of canada did not invent a new aesthetic, but instead adopted their aesthetic from pre-existing sources, tycho seemed to have adopted his aesthetic directly from boards of canada, like a two-tier derivation of some sort. and to continually churn out the same material in this style, without having carving that niche of musical style out yourself, definitely makes him a sort of production artist in the world of designers.

I don't think anyone in this topic really has a problem with Tycho, just that he's not forging his own identity. These visuals are proof of that.

I still like his music.

The "artisan" / "production artist" analogies are great, I think that's about right.

i should say, seeing as this was supposed to be a criticism of the visuals, i was at a moodgadget show a while back and all of their visuals were shoddy super 8 footage of cloud formations, waves, and nature.

moodgadget=roster of BoC ripoffs.

well maybe they just share the same aestethic preference but man... tycho does seem to be always 5 years behind BoC.

I mean SURFERS? really tycho? surfers? did they by any chance parachute from space?

Wouldn't have anything to do with Tycho being based in California and perhaps having an affinity for waves and summery images, would it?

yeah BoC is from Scotland and they did surfers, so if Tycho is going to ape them he would have to do a video with, um, sheep.

and

um

kilts

and maybe

wait a sec

soccer hooligans?

I don't see how some of you here notice how dark BoC is, I know were all numb to "darker" sounds but to most people BoC sounds insane to them.

Tycho's sound has not a lick of evil in it really if you listen to it. I really question some of the haters listening skills but hey I kind of like reading this stuff because its fun to show it to people.

Joyrex, thanks for dealing with this at the beginning, it started off as a gang bang I see, I wish I saw it early. I'll see you online on the PS3 one day soon I hope.

to me the whole "ripoff" artist accusation faces the same problem as the accusation of "selling out".

its not easy definable, and often the people engaging in such accusations find someone using or adhering to similar standards are somehow exempt from harassment.

there is no obvious, its all bias people.

i think the people who defend someone like tycho are guilty of the same thing hes doing. they are musicians and not artists, they dont have the ability or imagination or creativity to make anything new so they have to take other people ideas and basically just try their best to replicate them ...

its a pretty sad way to approach making art but a lot of people do it and it can be successful. so bless yer hearts and good luck maybe all you aphex and square pusher copiers will get signed to REPHLEXXXXXX cuz they clearly need another aphex twin wannabe.

i think you are nitpicking a lot here... so tycho is all happy music and boc has only some happy music? really?

I'm not hating scott at all, in fact, i have a lot of respect for him as an artist and i love a lot of his designs. i think what got lost here was not how much he copied boc's style but that after having so much backlash for it, he hasn't made a concerted effort to forge his own identity. does that make sense?

just out of curiosity, are you saying that tycho has not borrowed boc's sound or aesthetic at all?

also, how does one quantify someone's "listening skills"?

if most boc sounds insane to "most people" do you think you could play a random boc track and a random tycho track back to back and think they would know its two completely different artists?

edit: let me add too, if you find the campfire headphase to be evil sounding, i question your listening skills good sir.
