he does it very wll, im sure he has spent the better part of the last 5 years learning to incorporate guitars into his mix. will be very funny if the new boc has no guitars and his is tch part 2.

at first, i was a little  when i heard this dude a couple of years back, but now it's like :whistling: because it does take a certain amount of talent to do what he does both in terms of graphic and sound art. fact is, Boards of Canada were referencing certain time periods, aesthetic in a heavily sampled / emulating form, so we can't beat this guy to a pulp for having a particular feel that is a reference to something that is all about reference. :shuriken:

maybe its a California thing, from which Tycho also hails, but when Boards of Canada first came into my radar circa in the late 1990's it was like " yeah, this is pretty fucking great and somehow so familiar and friendly to my laid back psychedelia infused life. devotee 4life!" can't wait for some new shit from the boys, and one of these days i'll check out this Tycho fella all the way through, until then let the freak flag fly~

I know his art, and I can't knock on him for emulating a certain style that has been perfected before since I do the same thing. I've maybe heard 1 or 2 tracks of his, but I don't remember them. So as a graphic artist, he's very talented. As a musician, I don't know much.

I think he is very talented in both areas. very talented, he just has nothing new at all to bring to the table. it's all fart and no substance.

this video just shocked me that he is honing in on still being even more super boc after all the years of copycat backlash.

his visuals for the casino versus japan show i went to were nice. mostly ambient colors, ocean waves, abstract shapes, etc.. which all seemed to fit pretty well with the music.

that being said, i thought his artwork for cvj's self titled digital re-release was irreverent and unimaginative. and the fact that it was an exclusively digital was more than irritating.

seeing him live was pretty boring. too much of his focus went to his visuals. if he did any improvising at all in his music performance, it wasn't recognizable to me as someone who is familiar with his material. he basically pressed play on his laptop and tweaked some midi knob on his mixer to the beat.

jeez, i understand emulating idols but come on.... vintage colored surfers with hexagon lens flares? seriously?

BoC didn't invent that look and style no more than Tycho did. If anything, both are merely referencing a period of time with the sounds and visuals of their childhoods.

Personally, I think both BoC and Tycho take entirely different routes with their music, so for me the comparisons are getting weaker and weaker. Enjoy the music for what it is, not for what you think it's trying to be.

This is very true. I like Tycho's visuals and some of his music although a lot of it is forgettable, but most of all his website is an enjoyable source of things to hear and see.

i dont want to argue who invented what, but boc made that look very stylish. tycho no doubt has based his entire aesthetic around boc and their sound. i like a lot of his stuff and im not a tycho basher as much as a lot of others, i was just thinking that if it were me, id try very hard to separate myself so people would take me a little more seriously.

Sounds more like you're projecting a personal issue involving the acceptance of your peers, which Tycho may not/does not seem to share and so you're perceiving it as a character flaw when in reality, unlike you, he just has the liberating ability to not give a shit...perhaps?

Just my take on this.

well maybe they just share the same aestethic preference but man... tycho does seem to be always 5 years behind BoC.

I mean SURFERS? really tycho? surfers? did they by any chance parachute from space?

um....

no.

if you are going to quote me, keep it in context and don't extrapolate some psycho babble nonsense without knowing me.

and by the look of his stuff and the time he takes, he does care. I just think he should care about being a little more his own thing.

touche. maybe he just likes this sort of music and wants to make it. doesn't sound that similar to me though, more summer-y, bright and poppy. the thing that sets boc apart is the somewhat psychedelic/crazy/scary undertone imho (TCH could be compared but i mean, it's so warm that it melts).

Wouldn't have anything to do with Tycho being based in California and perhaps having an affinity for waves and summery images, would it?

It really annoys me whenever someone hears a detuned synth line or a hexagon they instantly think it's aping BoC's style or aesthetic...
