so in case anyone wasnt paying attention, the following statement is non factual

Bandcamp makes its money from fees for premium services, not scraping off a percentage of sales from that artist.

bandcamp makes their revenue exactly in that way, by shaving off a percentage of sales from the artist

in general for every sale you make, and if you get donation lower than the paypal fee itself and lower than the Bandcamp revenue percentage minimum you receive literally zero money and they eat it.

aah shit that sucks, 15% is quite a lot too.. :/

Dude, I don't know where you'll find a label or method of distribution where you'll get a better percentage than that.

doing it yourself. ^^

then again you need to pay server costs etc. so yeah i guess you're right.

but when you've got a premium account do they still take the percentage?

yes they still take the percentage, having a premium account pays for premium features, not the hosting / file conversion.

as you said, you could do it yourself but then you'd have to worry about paying for bandwidth. so Bandcamp really does seem to be the best convenience/practicality trade-off compared to doing it yourself.

Plus, there's the cost of web design. I can't speak for anyone else, but there's no way I could make something as pleasant design-wise as BC. Then I'd have to hire someone to do the design for me on top of the server costs. Couple this with the convenience of having a lot of independent music on one website with great compatibility with Google and it's no contest.

I'm fairly certain Bandcamp does not have 'premium accounts'. I've never heard of such things and couldn't find anything on the website. Unless you're talking about the download codes you can voluntarily purchase within the free account.

Do you offer any premium features?

Yes, please see our full list of features here

When you click on that link it takes you to the list of features for the free accounts (which is the only type of account), then when you scroll to the bottom there are download codes and download credits, which are available for purchase to everyone with any account. There's no 'premium service' that you pay a fee for like Soundcloud or anything like that.

[edit] and actually you don't have to even pay for download credits if you have enough album sales.

yeah there has never been a premium service for bandcamp, they make plenty of money from shaving off the top.

my biggest complaint about bandcamp is that it's interface is way less configurable an modifiable than say Blogger
