Bah, all these dirty hippies should be pouring their energies into is transitioning themselves from the 99% to the 1%.

Yes, that was dripping with sarcasm, but think about it for a minute - what can these protests actually accomplish? When the 1% are comprised of the very people who rule countries, make laws (or control the people who rule the countries and make the laws, to be accurate), do you honestly think any sort of fundamental change to how the economic system most of the world has adopted and runs on will occur?

Unless a fundamental shift in how the world conducts commerce and what we use for standards to back up our currencies happens, nothing is going to change. And for that change to happen, entire economies, governments and society itself will need to collapse, and many more people than there are now will suffer. The vast majority of the 99% will not be willing to take that risk, and eventually things will fall back into the status quo.

That's what we need.

List of Goals for Occupy Wall Street; 1) Free and fair elections. Public funding only, with real debates like we were taught in high school and college with debate teams and references and relevant issues that are strictly adhered to. 2) Get the corporate money out of elections. Create public election channels that would be the venue for debate and campaign education. No paid advertising on corporate media channels. With public funding and public campaign channels there will be no need to solicit special interest or corporate campaign funds. By doing this our elected officials will not be “owned”, or owe favors to special interest groups or corporations. 3) After election there should be no financial or gifting requirements to meet privately with elected officials. We realize that elected officials need to meet with experts when evaluating new legislation. When these meetings or consultations are necessary, representatives from all organizations that feel they have an interest in the pending legislation should have the option to send official representatives of their choice to a venue where all interested parties will debate the pending legislation so that the elected officials can properly understand the concerns of all parties both public and private. 4) Televised, public and transparent investigations into the financial meltdown, mortgage derivatives, who knew what, when and why the decisions were made to bail out private institutions with taxpayer money, what the taxpayers are getting in return, and what is being done to ensure that this type of situation does not happen again. 5) Televised, public and transparent investigations into Social Security funding, history of that funding, how those funds were managed and borrowed from, and a truthful assessment of how much actual liquid assets are available to continue dividend payments. Replacement of all funding that has been borrowed from the Social Security Fund and a secure low risk investment policy to help grow those funds.

6) Foreign relations that will allow the US to compete in World Trade. For too long we have had to compete with countries that do not have to pay living wages and benefits, provide safe and sanitary working conditions, or operate their corporations in an environmentally responsible manner. The cost of producing goods while at the same time taking Care of the people that allow them to continue to operate and keep our environment clean is expensive. We will never be able to compete, and will continue to lose jobs to countries that do not provide these basic human and environmental conditions. Corporations will continue to move their manufacturing centers to these countries and American workers will continue to lose jobs, and the ones they have will continue to pay smaller and smaller wages.

Why don't all of these protesters just vote for a third party candidate instead of Democrats for the thousandth time? Elect someone who will actually represent the 99%? Because Democrats and Republicans sure as hell aren't doing that.

And I'm not just talking about president. Congress too.

Just voting for a third party doesn't change the fundamental problems at hand. The system needs to be changed first. You can't just change the oil on a car that needs an engine overhaul.

Some formatting to make that a little clearer.

Points 1 - 5 no problems. All good.

#6 - To do this you do realize that your goods will increase in cost dramatically. Additionally, by taking away manufacturing jobs from developing countries, you will deteriorate their standard of living dramatically. South Korea, Japan and Taiwan all started out as manufacturing nations, now they all have very high standards of living.

Instead of removing manufacturing jobs from other countries, make education cheap or free in the States and people will move to positions where wages are higher. American manufacturing jobs were only able to compete in the past based on subsidies and tariffs, and absolute advantage. Now that those are disappearing it doesn't make sense to try and compete that way.

I have no interest in dismantling my economy so that a developing nation can pollute it's environment and float labour laws to give me cheaply something that i could make here using me and my fellow australians at not much higher a cost.

You are deluding yourself if you think that you and your fellow Australians can produce those goods for not much more. Sorry delet. The western worker costs much more than workers in China.

What would be more likely to happen is the corporations will move production out of those countries and use automation. So not only do jobs not increase in the Western world, but their is a net loss of jobs in the developing world.

I'm going to the Occupy Vancouver tomorrow. I want to catch the opening address to hear the platform. Also interested in seeing the demographics of the Vancouver one, since we have the nation's highest number of homeless people.

China is able to pay it's workers less and not worry about any sort of sane environmental or workplace health and safety laws. This isn't a level playing field to compete on. Next, germany is able to be a net exporter, making everything from basic household goods to high tech equipment. You may be able to manufacture more cheaply in china but it's sold in retail in australia at such a vast mark-up that we could very well produce it here. Either by giving our local workers some good steady skilled employment, or in dark factories. I could go on but why bother, you converted to the globalization borg a while back now. heh ;-]

I'm not disagreeing with you as to China's environmental policies (although there's a documentary about a village that fought a polluting factory and won in court using China's environmental laws - forcing them to clean up their act. I'll dig up the name for you in a second).

You think companies are going to give up their profit? Not a chance. You could produce it in Australia, but companies would just mark up their prices even more to cover the additional capital cost.

You talk about globalization as if it's some new thing but it's not. In fact, globalization is a large part of why you and your family is in Australia. The real difference is that the first wave of globalization actually allowed for free labor flows, which is something I've been a supporter of for about 6 or 7 years now. Reduce the hassle for immigration, and let workers go where the money is.
