thanks, good read.

I think the appointment of Tim Kaine was a shrewd choice, they don't need to win over poor white southern voters, but if they win Ohio they're probably set, and he should help there - they've been campaigning there for the last few days, think they'll probably spend a lot of time there over the next months.

It mostly doesn't matter who's elected for a lot of these people though, in terms of results I mean. Most of those factory jobs aren't coming back, no matter what either candidate promises. Don't think there are any quick fixes for the problems they've got.

This is the thing I find so unbelievable, is that Trump has somehow managed to sell himself as someone the working class can identify with. If there is anyone who personifies the elite of America, it's Drumpf.

I truly feel sorry for Americans. They have a choice of choosing between a dog or a dog with fleas.

As you may have guessed, I fucking hate politics - the corruption, the inner sanctums, the elite making all the rules, the self-serving individuals with vested interests in making things better for them and not those that elected them.

At least I don't live in North Korea.

I am still very thankful for a lot of the freedoms granted to us despite all of the systematic corruption, oppression, inequality, etc. We have freedom of speech, no conscription, no state run press only, etc. For example I can talk absolute shit about all of the candidates and elected officials without being arrested.

The frustration lies in that actually, for all the freedom we have it's so carefully repressed and selective most people are blissfully ok with the state of things, or worse, channel their grievances in misleading and misinformed ways. That's the core of why a snake-oil salesman like Trump can make it so far.

Bookmarked. I imagine it expands on the premise of  What's the Matter with Kansas? which was prophetic of the "Tea Party" movement and is more relevant than ever.

Just in case anyone was wondering, my previous comment wasn't an anti-American sentiment - it could equally be applied to anywhere.

joshuatx is right. Imagine living in a part of the world with no internet?

Politics reminds me of a line from a film I cannot remember the name of.

"Haven't you heard of the Golden Rule?"

"No. What's that?"

"He who has the gold makes the rules."

^ omg what is that from it's driving me nuts. It's something I remember hearing as a kid, it was quite amusing to hear that flipped around.

Isn't it just a common saying? I remember hearing it when I was a kid (and onwards) as well.

and apparently it was also in the the Disney version of Aladdin.

None taken, in fact ironically i often feel bad for not being more happy about being from America and Texas and/or appreciating the great traits of said places (i recall after the thread How does the World view America these days? some non-Americans were like "don't hate yourselves so much" after many American WATMMERs like me went down the long lists of why this country is terrible lol). Sure there's plenty to be embarrassed and frustrated about but that can be said of anyone from anywhere I guess. Home is home regardless of the government in place and the negative cultural and socio-political tendencies that rear their ugly head. I always try to think of it that way if I can muster it.

Probably the best thing I've read on the elections so far. Reminds me a lot of the rhetoric around the EU ref vote here too. Thanks for sharing this.

America loves trainwrecks though and the public is a morbidly curious bunch. But yeah I can't imagine there being a huge revival of Trump in any way in the polls. Back to near 50/50 maybe but nothing as close as before he fucking insulted parents of a dead American war veteran. I still can't fathom this kind of shit is actually happening.
