Some recent notable things: Barton Fink (1990) - So good. One of their best. Definitely going on a Coen Bros. bender this week. Zappa (2020) - Well done documentary, recommended even for those who are not fans of his music. Son of Saul (2015) - Horrific and visceral descent into a concentration camp, but in a respectful way, I felt. Citizen Kane (1941) - I wasn't blown away but can definitely see the appeal. Ready to dive into the world of Orson Welles now. Mank (2020) - Brutally boring. Dogshit script, imo.

not electronic, but the new Idles record, Ultra Mono, was a pretty big bummer aside from 1 or 2 songs. undercooked with pretty bad lyrics. shame, because they are one of the better rock bands out today. the new king krule record was not bad, just not very memorable. i was hoping for something more outstanding from such a talent.

This Australian duo have a great new ep out, following what is one of my favourite releases of 2020, their album "Snoopy". For fans of Coil, HTRK... https://csandkreme.bandcamp.com/album/howwouldyoufeelwithoutthatthought https://csandkreme.bandcamp.com/album/snoopy

Land of Silence and Darkness by Werner Herzog (1971) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U68tMGEqL5o "A 1971 documentary film about deaf-blind people and their experience of life." If you are looking for a good documentary, this is one of my favourites... although you may have to prepare some tissues as it exposes you to the pure existential torment of being locked inside a body. I have seen about 20 Werner Herzog films now and think this is one of the best.

William Basinski — Lamentations [CD, 2xLP]

Yo, this is a beauty of a record. Maybe I'm just in the right head space but its quite relaxing, with some nice micro details throughout. -

This is hitting me hard right now. If it sounds good and the cover compliments the sound... i'm all in, baby. -
That is awesome to hear! Loved the first one... was not prepared for it to go so psychedelic and technical towards the end. The Dark Forest was incredible, although at times it felt like a bunch of cool ideas strung together. I think the english translation did not flow as well as the previous book. With that said, I read the last 200 pages or so in one sitting, haha. Looking forward to the third.

I just blasted through the first two books of Liu Cixin's The Three Body Problem trilogy. Damn... mind-bending sci-fi. Strong recommendation.

I don't think he has worked for Apple for a few years now. He is an artist who has fallen into a bit of a formula no matter what he tries. You basically know exactly how a NIN track will go after about 30 seconds. So I think trying something outside his comfort zone like this and the old-timey score for Mank could have a good impact?

Great video and cool song. Not something you'd expect from a guy in his late 60s. Sent me down a Oingo Boingo spiral.

which one does the bleeps and which one does the bloops?

He can be insightful at times but it really is just personal opinion, at the end of the day. The difficulty and obtuseness of autechre are what keeps me coming back. It's like a floating feather that you cant quite catch. I don't want to be cruel but hey its a visual medium — I hope his patreon supporters fund a new hair cut. When he does that hair flip in the back my blood pressure rises.

So far my standouts are the little piano-like part at the end of X4, esel 0 and marhide (which sounds like serenely floating through a sewer system)

Skinny Puppy - Last Rights (2020 Vinyl Reissue)
gnarlybog replied to Rubin Farr's topic in New & Upcoming Releases
I see their entire discography as similar to autechre in a way... constant evolution, some ups and downs but everything is worth revisiting. I get the sense that fans would love if they retained a little more of their classic sound. They were creeping closer to it in the last album. I feel like the minority who likes it all.- 11 replies

Wow, I feel so spoiled. Still diving into SIGN. Immediate reaction is lol @ the cowbell. It's reminding me of Confield in places.

Skinny Puppy - Last Rights (2020 Vinyl Reissue)

This album is a masterpiece! Glad to see it get mentioned here. It's a shame they signed one of the worst deals ever so I don't think they see any profit from their albums on Nettwerk. One of their later labels also went bankrupt, and the singer basically got robbed of thousands of dollars from Pledgemusic. Brutal.- 11 replies

Pretty rad! The score for the last Halloween was fantastic, really nasty. He is one of my favourite directors and while I have pretty much abandoned all hope that he will ever direct a feature again, this is nice.

While I still enjoy SIGN, I find it frustrating that nothing hits quite as hard as that first livestream listen? it felt like 25 minutes of going 'woahhh'! Like every album release, it forced me to revisit the previous NTS Sessions which I once found spotty and impenetrable. Some more gems for sure, but thats how it goes with autechre.

I've only had one listen so I can't make any sweeping claims, but it nicely complimented my autumn walk. It seems he's mostly concerned with texture and vibe but found myself wishing for a bit more melody from time to time. Anyway, it feels like a grower. Like a more accessible Ghettoville, in a way.
