  1. i cannot help but wonder why vinyl keeps on being a thing. using fossils and all that. The climate footprint of vinyls compared to digitals... is that even a fair comparison?
  2. looks like a match! i have an apple airport express connected to my receiver (a nad c368). the airport has a digital connection, so d/a is done by my receiver. works fine for me. wouldn't work on a 70s receiver, im afraid.
  3. Are f-ing kidding me? Not sure if youre aware of frusciantes efforts in electronic music. If you are please agree to disagree. But calling him too limited as a musician… my god, most of the artists were talking about here are even more limited… wtf!?
  4. In bullets: - he should release the music he wants to - I would def be interested in hearing tunes from his archives! (also because I'm just not into his newer stuff. ... sowwwwwie) - please do a collaboration with john frusciante! that would be amazeballs!
  5. lossy vs lossless intelligence i encode my intelligence lossy. it shrinks the size, and i don't even notice the difference ?
  6. Pivot tables most underrated invention of previous century
  7. I read this post of yours. I didn't refuse to read posts in general. I just don't go with the "read my comment i wrote somewhere else" BS. This is not a work environment. It's not my job to invest in and keep track of everything ever said around here. If you disagree, I'm happy to support you having an opinion I disagree with. watmmmmmm 666th post party ??
  8. We also need tolerance. It's not realistic to expect an academic level of accuracy in public discussions. But I would agree that real expertise is completely undervalued in public discussions. Not your point, but could be. Fair enough, I guess. But complaining about it only makes life hard. Can't be bothered, tbh. Just like I can't be bothered to track your entire comment history. Even within this thread. Going back one or two pages? Sorry, man. Would you be arsed to check my pervious comments? I assume not. (no disrespect!)
  9. You sound conflicted. In your other post you seemed to criticize the use of concepts like knowledge, consciousness, intelligence, language model and what not. And at the same time you crave a more philosophy in our society. Perhaps it’s not philosophical savvy, but I see it everywhere. Quantity is not the issue I’m guessing. But quality is? Or rather, those slaves devoted to the morally bankrupt tech sector? But is that because of a lack of philosophy in our society? I’d love to take the opposite side of the argument! ? Here’s a bunch of silly thoughts: - even if people would be more philosophically savvy, they’d still show interest in tech. - who’s to say a more philosophical society isnt morally bankrupt? (Looks at ancient greece)
  10. I dont understand the problem with using a term like language model. Its a technical term thats fairly concrete as opposed to wishy washy try-hard self serving pseudo philosophy lingo. A markov chain based on some corpus is a language model. Or a statistical representation of a collection of texts, if you will. And its perfectly relevant in the context of chatGPT. or, as wiki says: I would agree with being hesitant to fall into the trap of “theory of mind” kind of arguments when it comes to chatGPT, though. Or the “hey look, it’s sentient!” kind of response. But people are perfectly free to go there.
  11. My first non-expert impression of the indictment is they've gone for the most simple version. Or least severe charges. But I'll wait for the expert opinions to tell me what the actual meaning is. So far though, it's mostly the number (#34 indictments) that's impressive about this case.
  12. In a way, GPT's have shown that a complex enough language model has an interesting side effect of also modelling knowledge. As an emergent property, if you will. As far as I'm concerned, that also says a lot about our own biological neural networks. Despite our experience being vastly different, we might actually work more similar to how GPT's work than we might believe. We're just a bunch of biological robots. Some moreso than others, of course! ?
  13. There are people using chatgpt to code. Give some requirements and ask for some code in a specific language. And there are people asking to explain things. Examples of physicians putting in some cases and asking what to do given the current literature and clinical guidelines. it is very much an expert system. Not sure what's so hard to understand here. It's trained on pretty much the entire internet and as such a summary of all knowledge on there. And the user can acquire that knowledge by what seems like a normal conversation.
  14. Please amuse me with making an actual argument. it's not just another chatbot. or a markov chain.
  15. exactly. the irony is you can point the same criticisms towards humans. that's what makes these criticisms appear so naive. to me at least. on the larger agi fears: as long as GPT doesn't tell us where to go next in science (unifying theory of physics?), there's nothing "autonomous" about it. currently it's a rasther successful language model combined with the ability to summarise vast amounts of data/knowledge. it's an expert-system, if you will. but without the ability to be autonomous, as far as i can tell. a technology which will bring a new kind of industrial revolution. said it before and still think that.
  16. Currently enjoying Quaristice and the various versions. Just put them all in a tracklist, sorted alphabetically, and spot the favourites. Have to say though, that often I prefer the versions from the original album. Mostly shorter and more succinct versions. But that's also because I'm not a big fan of those long drawn out ambient tracks. Not my cup of tea. Although I can understand them as statements, if you will. Thing is, I'm appreciating the album more thanks to all the live versions and moments. So many recognisable themes and bits on that album. Bit of nostalgia. Without any of it sounding dated to my ears. I think I underrated it. ?
  17. Aha ....riiiight Lets assume this was an early april 1st..??? (soorry, the first link was confusing.)
