  1. A more percussive accompaniment to Oversteps, much of which I prefer to that, not crazy about the flutes of nth Dafuseder.b every time through, though
  2. First off, the former is perhaps easy to write off as filler (though at times it calls to mind parts of VI Scose Poise with a bit of imagination), a nothing of an interlude, as it lies between fan favourites Perlence and Simmm. You could call it a little segue onto the second side of the first LP (if you have the 2xLP version). Not too too much going on, really. Feels more of a reprise of its' counterpart than the corresponding cut does an extension of it, if you ask me. However, the latter, expanded version found on the limited Quaristice (versions), is a tasty treat which is nice to see the presence of among its cohort although I always find myself wishing it were longer still, or at least if this fleshed out rendition had made it to the album proper. Like some of my other Quari-faves like The Plc and IO (mons), this has some really fun vocal fuckery. And it also has some great oddball sense of of melodic content, too, which call to mind the Glasgow Art School set and other 2005 performances which were said to be instrumental to the nascent Quaristice. Aaaaaaand, the title gives us another reference to this being the ninth album (in Roman numerals).

    Perlence losid 2

I love how washed out this one is, no real clear contours. It's not a total blur but there are no clean "edges" to it, either
  4. It's funny -- contrary to its name, newbound seems to harken backwards to both Oversteps and Quaristice. If we can imagine Oversteps (and Move of Ten) as nearby moons to the planet Quaristice, newbound feels like some sort of vessel in midflight between the two celestial bodies with a decent amount of both the gaseous satellite and a little of the rocky surface of the homeworld still in view.
  5. I love the breakbeat feel of this one, and also the extreme minimalism of it
  6. Have a little respect for one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century and 21st so far pl0x Cool video until the end, because it stabilized before the 666th generation

    PEN EXPERS

A nonzero amount of Autechre's music could be described, with poetic license, as auditory calligraphy
  8. I think a lot of Quari is *triggered* hardware, hence all the MPC program files, Nord sysex, etc. we got from this era Yes, this is what I mean by physical; many sounds seem like recordings, possibly, in many cases, tweaked sample/samples of nonsynthesized origin/origins and/or some absolutely next level physical modeling
  9. Seven if you count 9013-2 World needs more physical modeling/granular synthesis hardware imo
  10. The cover feels like a crown of laurels and if there's anyone in music who deserves to rest on their laurels it's The Brothers 'chre-amazov
  11. The cover feels a bit like a literal "ring of fire" like in that Johnny Cash song lol
  12. Absolutely love this and Gantz Graf so much I wish there was a Confield (versions), to say nothing of the 2001 of live sets, I could buy from Messrs Booth & Brown. Also, as it turns 25 in 2026, I think Confield would be a prime choice for the inaugural album if Ae ever felt like doing special anniversary editions, esp since I think they know by now that many of their most diehard fans (talking about us here and r/Autechre) would absolutely gobble that shit up
  13. Also, tickled pink/pleased as punch at the six takes of 90101
  14. As far as their non-limited edition albums available on physical media (a necessary qualifier since I love elseq 1-5 and NTS Sessions so much) are concerned, Exai (and its companion EP, L-event), are tied with Quaristice (and its companions) for my favourite/what I consider peak Autechre.
  15. The rhythmic rustling around eight minutes into The PlcCpC is so fucking masterful. Having a relisten to Quaristice (versions) to christen my new last.fm account/new computer. The springy bell sound starting around 4:13 in Perlence range 3. Fuuuuuuuuuck. This shit gets better and better and it's already 14 years old and remains leaps and bounds ahead of a lot of other things. I am grateful Tankakern gets the "triple feature" treatment appearing on the main LP, the dubs (Tankraken), and Quadrange (Tkakanren). How physical some of these sounds are for something so digitally produced is in itself a mindfuck like no other. This applies to a lot more than just fol4, but really, who among us is not grateful for every second of the almost 12 minutes of fol4? Sweet Jesus, that's a gourmet feast for the ears if there ever was one. At least three small missed opportunities, though, which only an Ae obsessive could possibly have. The first of which is that both Phlyopn and plyPhon are around 2:40 it could have been nice to expand somewhat more. Secondly, I would have loved an alternate take or expansion of Simmm. Many of these sounds are found elsewhere so those are both kinda moot. Lastly, I wish SonDEre-ix was at least twice as long, it feels like a real underdog. Besides that my only gripe is Altichyre was unneeded, even if it was rather pretty. [Damn, I wish I had a hard copy. Can I buy FLAC/WAV of it from Sean and Rob the way I can the main album on the Ae Store somehow? I would absolutely pay twice the price of Quaristice or more if it came with lossless files of these extended versions]
  16. Vangelis did come to mind listening to Ae somewhat recently for me listening to wetgelis casual interval. Sonically, it feels like a snippet of eastre (as far as S&R are concerned) but this piece you've shared by the Greek synth maestro (eat shit Yanni team Vangelis all the way lol) does sound like a number of things the lads have done recently in a number of facets, some of the patches (both some of the early twinkles and the pads), as well as something in its melodic sense. Good call, this is a truly beautiful piece. I'll have to check out the rest of this score.
  17. Pretty big end of the year haul, y'all. Three albums by the J.B.'s: Food for Thought (1972) Doing It to Death (1972) Damn Right I Am Somebody (1974) Two by Cocteau Twins: Treasure (1984) Blue Bell Knoll (1988) Some electroacoustic improvisation: Hideaki Shimada Septet - recorded 2013, released 2014 (Full personnel: Hideaki Shimada; Toshihiro Koike; Ko Ishikawa; Tetuzi Akiyama; Kenichi Matsumoto; Daisuke Takaoka; Madoka Kouno; Kazushige Kinoshita; Junji Hirose; Hideo Ikegami; Maresuke Okamoto; Manabu Suzuki) Some techno: Stacey Pullen as Silent Phase - (The Theory Of) (1995) Woody McBride as 4D - Asclepias (1994) Dylan Hermelijn & Gert-Jan Schonewille as Mindscape - Mindscape (1994) Electric Indigo - 5 1 1 5 9 3 (2018) Robert Armani - Next Start (1994) A house album by a now departed legend: Paul Johnson - Bump Talkin (1995) Some older dubstep: Dubstep Allstars Vol. 04: Youngsta & Hatcha (2006) And an ambient/musique concrete album: Steve Roden - Speak No More About the Leaves (2003)
  18. A bootleg from 1996 of Richie Hawtin (aka Plastikman) playing a rave put on by some friends of a friend of mine
  19. Listening to a collection of tracks by Chicago footwork producer DJ Rome that I bought directly from him
  20. I've always liked his contributions to the Artificial Intelligence series, as well as the albums Loudboxer and Ginger
  21. The guy's name is basically synonymous with reggae bass. His loss is as monumental as the bassweight he left behind.
