Is this an official remix or even ae for that matter? I checked here with no luck. Sorry if this subject was covered somewhere else but i searched and couldn't find. and if it is fake, does anyone know who did do the remix?

never heard of it would you mind posting a clip? I only know of one autechre coil remix of Panic but its so indistinguishable i would hardly call it a remix.

this is a completely fake remix of Coil. In fact i wouldnt call it a remix at all, its verbatum the original coil track with a cutup break beat on top of it. I heard this on the Coil mailing list quite some time ago (like in 1998) and when it was made by a fan, not Autechre.

Its funny i actually heard of Autechre from a statement made by the lead singer of Coil talking about how much he loved them. They were supposed to release a collaboration album at the same time as Chiastic Slide called Intercourse. apparently they did some rough recordings on it but it was never finished

the aphex twin remix of firestarter is a much more convincing fake than this.

yea, i should have known better than to think that ae would just throw a beat over someone elses song and call it a remix. ntl, it's a pretty dope song. one of the very few hundreds of coil tracks that is that beautiful. thanks for the info.

Hi There

I remember sharing this around years ago, it wasn't called the autechre mix, then, at that time i was on the coil mailing list and shared it around as Autechre had played it on their 'Disengage' show. My mate chris used to tape all the shows, and I wanted to share this with the coil listers as Ae had added beats to the track in their show.

so it's not a fake, and it's not a real remix either. but that's the source of it.

peace

John

Hmm... I find a fair bit of Coil's catalog to be beautiful... Obviously not so much of the early to mid stuff but Astral Disaster is lush as fuck! 'The Mothership and the Fatherland', now that's beautiful! 'Going Up'... my god...

Full Coil conversation from Wire magazine Listening Room session, 1998:

COIL

“Dimathoxy-4-Ethyl-Amphetamine” from Time Machines (Eskaton)

RB: I was just going to say the heating system’s got a tone to it.

(They both adopt bugged-out faces and stare at the table in silence for about two minutes)

SB: It sounds like Coil. Is that Time Machines? Yeah, fucking hell.

RB: It’s weird because it sounds a lot older.

SB: I can’t listen to it anymore. I can’t play it anymore. The last time I heard this it really spun me out. It’s fucking stunning this CD.

Aren’t you working with them?

SB: It’s a long, slow process.

Are you exchanging tapes?

SB: Ideas more.

RB: Yeah, throw a spanner in the works as well.

SB: Nuff respect, wicked.

What is it about Coil that you respond to?

SB: That’s the thing you can’t say. It’s about opening doorways, I think. They open loads of doorways. They don’t always go all the way into it, but they just sort of show you this doorway and it’s just such a spin out sometimes.

RB: Coil are just in a sphere. Usually it’s quite captivating. They’re quite a captive band, really. No matter what they do, there’s something in there that’s just absolutely them and it keeps you in there.

Did you used to listen to Dead Can Dance as well?

SB: Yeah, a little bit. Selective bits. Not too much of the cheesy World/ethno stuff, more the later stuff. I reckon that “The Host of the Seraphim” is gorgeous. That’s the end of what I was into. I was more into that than the instrument specialist tracks.

Did the Industrial movement mean anything to you?

SB: We didn’t come from that point of view at all. We used to go to this Hardcore club, and the DJ, who was totally decent, we were doing this radio thing with him, he played it. He played tracks from Love’s Secret Domain at 45, just totally fucking them up. He was always into weird stuff as well.

RB: Yeah, he used to torment his audience quite a bit. He’d be playing to rave crowds, dropping Coil at 45 in the mix.

SB: He was totally stunning, looking back. We bought everything they (Coil) were doing around that time and then just went backwards and tried to get as much stuff as possible. It’s so dense. They’re really into what they’re doing at a pretty intimate level. There’s only them and :zoviet*france: and The Hafler Trio that made any impression on us, at that time. A bit of Chris & Cosey too, I suppose.

Do you think you share a hermetic stance with those guys?

SB: I think it’s how you go about listening to it. I think if you’re prepared to be barraged by certain things, then you accept it as part of the plan. It starts to work, it’s pretty weird. Coil have a knack of making things that are pretty sickly anywhere else and making them totally apparent. I mean, this is absolutely amazing. It’s so fucking easy to do, but it’s totally effective.

I feel the exact opposite, everything before Astral Disaster and after LSD is superb, their best stretch imo. Black Light District, Worship the Glitch and Stolen and Contaminated songs are golden records. Highly original, highly creative, playful, almost no vocals, mostly purely electronic music. Coil then got a little too pretentious and into the whole death folk PAGAN performance art thing after this for me. but this is when they also got a lot of new fans. I'm in the minority though, i find most of Coil's vocal works int their later period extremely cringe worthy and unoriginal.

i like some of their newer stuff (and some of the threshold houseboys choir project) but have to agree.. lsd, elph vs coil and black light district, that whole stretch is what totally does it for me. i think they just started releasing too much stuff at a certain point, every teeny experiment they were doing..

autechre+coil not working out is as disappointing for me as the hendrix+miles collaboration that never happened =)

I've listened to LSD but that's about it. I enjoy it but it sounds pretty dated now. If I like Oversteps what album should I listen to next?

Check out the Threshold House edition of The Remote Viewer.

Totally lush record and should already sound a little familiar after known(1) :) The Threshold House edition has two extra tracks which are both absolutely wicked (the original version was a CD-R they sold on tour)

I think I just prefer Coil when they're not being playful. I want them to be morbid. Black Antlers is my favourite, And the Ambulance Died in His Arms kills me, stuff like that. I don't find it too pretentious, Balance just got obsessed with his Paganism (probably from hanging with David Tibet too much, he was always appearing on Current 93 records) and it became a fixture. He came off anti-depressants and started taking walks by the river and that's when Coil's stuff changed to what he called "Moon Musick". You must remember that he was stark raving bonkers also... And even his childish lyrics can't stop a track like 'Heaven's Blade' from being stupidly good.

I was at the gig where 'Ambulance' recorded (the Autechre ATP of course). The recording sounds a lot drier than I remembered it - especially the vocal which I can mostly take or leave, but in the room they were just totally hypnotic. If memory serves, it was Sunday afternoon which might have something to do with the vibe of it. FWIW, Perlence Subrange 6-36 always reminds me of 'The Dreamer Is Still Asleep'. Nostalgia.
