His preludes are quite early, almost debussyish, by the time you arrive at the Vingt Regards, he really knew what he was about. it is considered his tour de force for the piano. it really is spectacular from start to finish. some of the most beautiful slow tempo stuff ive heard, and some of the pieces are so astoundingly ferocious they'l give you nightmares.

the organ music is out of this world, sometimes there is nothing more enjoyable to do than sit with a massive joint and bang on 'meditations sur la mystere de la saint trinite' full volume and just close your eyes and experience the thickest musical colour imaginable.

 

in fact listening to 'meditiations...' on a massive church organ in a candlelit cathedral with some potent skunk scores pretty highly on my 'do before die' list.

 

guilty about sounding pedantic also, but '20 gazes upon the baby jesus' is a more accurate translation of the title alot of messiaenic scholars claim.

 

fuck, im tipsy and youve sent me off on one now, also the turingalila symphony, if you have not already heard it, is possibly the most mindblowing hour of music ever, get on it if you havent and you enjoy the organ stuff.
