15TH JUNE ZIQ243 MILANESE - LOCKOUT 2x12"/CD

Just released is Lockout, a double ep by Milanese, specially made in Berlin using groove cutting techniques pioneered by legendary Detroit cutting engineer Ron Murphy with Heath Brunner.

The recordings on one side of each of these records have parallel grooves, so you get one of two tracks depending where you lay the needle. An impressive product and the music is top notch stuff as well, with Milanese expanding the remit of his music even further. A remix by producer of the moment Untold is also included!

22ND JUNE ZIQ238 FEW NOLDER - NEW FOLDER 2LP/CD

Few Nolder's album came out today. He is a new Planet Mu signing, with a debut album of that showcases his unique brittle take on European dance music; bright blocks of sound with pointillist minimal techno detail, swinging drums and bitter sweet melodies. It’s certainly a departure for Planet Mu but a welcome one.

Here is a mix he’s done to celebrate the release with a few of his bootlegs on:

29TH JUNE ZIQ234 LEGION OF TWO - RIFFS 2LP/CD

Legion of Two's album comes out next week; it’s a warm, tropical miasma of live instrumentation, digital noise and melody that’s informed by some of dubstep’s modes and FXs, bass and mood.

Dense and unusual, it takes dubstep’s dark cavernous spaces and fills them with chattering uncanny layers of sound. It’s a brave and exciting release that would have been unimaginable a few years ago.

Incidentally one half of Legion of two Alan O’Boyle who has released music on Planet Mu before as Decal, making up the Legion is the Dublin based drummer and improviser David Lacey.

06TH JULY ZIQ241 BRACKLES - LHC 12"

Brilliant, hyperactive dubstep from this renowned dj and producer that’s rhythmically informed by older garage and newer funky, but with a penchant for scrawled melodies that sound like the melodic equivalent of a child drawing with a felt tip pen .

Brackles has released on Berkane Sol and Applepips, but this is his Planet Mu debut , with another E.P. following soon!

Check out his Fact Magazine mix from a few months ago here:

06TH JULY ZIQ242 FLOATINGPOINTS - J&W BEAT 12"

Floating Points is a new artist from London whose brilliant productions are garnering tons of attention from people such as Gilles Peterson, Maryanne Hobbs and Benji B over at the BBC. These two tracks highlight two sides to his graceful and sunny productions. Warm Detroit techno influenced music with drums that sound like they’re equally informed by Hip hop and Garage, it’s absolutely perfect summer listening and a key ep for Planet mu.

Check out a mix of his here:

13TH JULY ZIQ145 BIZZY B - RETROSPECTIVE 3LP/CD

This is exactly what it says, a retrospective from one of Jungle’s greatest producers, like the Remarc Compilation a few years back, Mike’s handpicked the best of the best, just to remind you how amazing jungle at its greatest was and what an incredible producer Bizzy B is.

20TH JULY ZIQ024 JEGA - VARIANCE (VOLUMES 1 & 2) 2LP/2CD

Finally we come full circle, back to the guy who inspired Planet Mu to start in the first place. Jega’s finally completed his new album. Since the leak of the original Variance album several years ago, which contributed to a nine year absence from the music scene, the album has grown beyond recognition into a two volume work. Variance is the culmination of Jega's musical exploration in synthesis, sampling, melody and polyrythmic beats. Volume one envelopes the more melodic and lighter side of his sound, Volume two, the darker, more intense side (all the clips are now up!). Nathan is currently working on a video to accompany Variance. It’s been a long wait, but the album will not disappoint fans old or new.

Forthcoming in August:

10TH AUG ZIQ240 LUKE VIBERT - WE HEAR YOU 2LP/CD,

17TH AUG ZIQ246 NEIL LANDSTRUMM - BAMBAATAA EATS HIS BREAKFAST 2X12"/CD

24TH AUG ZIQ248 TERROR DANJAH - SAMPLER E.P. 12"

And then Mary Anne Hobbs - ‘Wild Angels’ in September, her best LP yet - but more about that next month!

15TH JUNE ZIQ243 MILANESE - LOCKOUT 2x12"/CD

fantastic album, though i wish there was an instrumental cut of the whole thing also . What mastering house cut the 12" to do those paralell grooves? i know a guy in Colorado who can do it but im assuming you used someone in the UK

edit: not sure if you would be familiar with this either but do you use Transition for any of your dubstep leaning stuff? i just got through with a fucking nightmarish situation trying to get a simple 12" cut by them.

Some of the vibert sounds like a step forward for Luke, but a few of the tracks are throwaway reminders to his older works. I guess I lost my excitement for Luke's stuff when I quit the weed but I'm still hoping this'll be good

his avatar is dubstep

This is debatable, but a quality EP nonetheless...

I've got alot of respect for Mu generally, but I just don't have a great deal of interest in much of the dubstep that Mike puts out because there is just so much of it.

Maybe with the exception of Boxcutter and Milanese, who i've actually forgotten about for the past couple of releases anyway.

That new Vibert sounds top, lots of fun

his avatar is dubstep- Jamie Vex'd

partially correct, Jamie Vex'd is a primarily dubstep artist, but his avatar happens to be of his latest EP which imo sounds like a straight flying lotus ripoff, i dont think it could be classified as dubstep

Does it ? Never heard flying lotus, like the Jamie Vexd ep though and yeah it's not dubstep.

when will mu stop with the dubstep, people please stop listening and supporting it! :( at least wonky off-beat hip-hop is a fun to listen to novelty act. the "novelty" in dubstep is utter fail.

I'm not really too sure where you're coming from here, the dubstep market is obviously a huge one and i very much doubt people will be buying the Mu stuff for 'novelty' reasons, wouldn't they go for the all out cheesy macho jump up wobble shit, Caspa & Rusko etc.

I don't know why i feel the need to defend Mu, but I can be sure that what they're putting out is really high end and well produced records. It may well be novelty to people on IDM forums, but in the small DIY nights, free & squat parties etc it is just as important as anything else in the rave diet/

Probably like other movements growing in size, it could be watered down at some point and introduced into popular music, in whatever form although I struggle to see how much of the original idea will be retained....I don't think Joe Public would find it very paletable.

Way to contradict myself in a thread!

+1

Fuck a duck, the Floating Points 12" is shit hot. I have been bouncing back and forth between the two tracks just licking my chops for more. This is the direction we need to be heading.

have you been listening to any of the Wonky movement going on? Because that's basically what this is. Check out All City records, paul white, samiyam, lukid etc.
