Kaini's thread about the super-modded C64 has given me the bug to dive into chiptunes created with the C64, Atari ST, and Amiga computers. I began searching and discovered that there are millions of them... I don't know where to start.

Who would you suggest is the Aphex Twin, Autechre, and BOC of chiptunes? No emulations please... only tracks done entirely in the vintage machines.

since this thread had me looking up some old tunes, i found this golden gem:

dune: spice opera

these are based on pc fm synthesis and not really chiptunes, but i love fm just as much (if not more) as sid, so i thought i'd share.

quality.

Excellent! It's interesting how each artist's style comes through in spite of the extremely limited sonic pallet.

I have to say that I liked Snafu's and Data's tracks at least as much as the others. This thread has reminded me of a demo that was on my Atari ST :

The Red Sector Demo (Mildly NSFW low-res 80's graphics at one point)

The Dune stuff is awesome, lets add FM to the thread. Those dune tracks reminded me of an old arcade game that was way ahead of its time with FM tone generation:
