Li'l B's lolworthy lecture at NYC

i think if lil b came forward as a performance artist and didn't pretend to be a rapper i might be able to appreciate him a little bit more. i have a bit of a bias toward rock music because i allow terrible lyricism if the music is good. and that's most pop music. in rap, for whatever reason, i need the lyricism to have some kind of competence or i can't listen to it. and lil b sounds like a spoken word artist speaking in run on sentences over slowdive samples. it's just not for me.

shit like this just confuses me:

i was gonna write a very long assholish rant about why Lil B is retarded and horrible. But why bother anymore.

I was just about to post some of those Clams Casino tracks, imo they are the only tracks worth listening too. The "I'm God" instrumental is too good, anyone who spits over it makes a decent song:

I can't believe you actually attended his performance, KY. You were already by far the most formulaic hipster out there and you're getting worse.

I'm pretty fascinated with the manic fandom that surrounds this guy. It seems pretty unique to me. I mean I don't claim to understand rap music or engage with it in any legit way but it definitely goes beyond mere hipster fadism or whatever you want to call it to the point where he could probably easily start his own cult. Pulled this from another message board:

"man that show was crazy. like it started out like a normal rap show but to me at some point it stopped being one and turned into something else, something beautiful and profound and just a totally awesome experience. for me the pivoting point was when he performed "age of information", which i was so happy about because that's one of my fav songs. but then after the first verse he seemed to forget the words, which is understandable considering how many he has, and then just made record scratching sounds and throwing in a word or two here and there for the rest of the song, which is like 4 min or so. he let people on stage and after wonton soup and some cooking/swag-type songs started doing acapellas of deeper material and started to get kinda sad it almost seemed. it got to the point where i couldn't keep up with whether he was ad-libbing based verses or doing a written song and it just felt like he was going completely off the cuff and letting us experience his mind and thoughts totally unfiltered. he would start rhyming and then stop himself and at first it seemed it was because he forgot the words but then it seemed like he was stopping cause he was getting choked up and sad and shit was too real for him. and then like wildarms said he finally stopped rapping on a certain part and was just like "i'm down....i'm down....i'm down" all melancholy and then someone was like you're up now though and there was this massive group hug onstage and he then basically went along hugging every person on stage and in the crowd. i got to hug him and tell him i loved him and he responded back and it was just a crazy experience and i feel so blessed to have been apart of it all. it doesn't even feel like i was at a rap concert but instead some type of bizarre spiritual experience."

Easy to snigger at for sure but he seems to be making a lot of people happy so I can get behind that.

oh, interesting. who are you again?

edit: for what it's worth, you're the one being condescending about musical tastes, so congratulations for that.

I haven't got around to listening to Lil B but all the people I know who do seem to genuinely appreciate it. Yeah they might repeat his joke catchphrases a lot but that doesn't mean they're listening ironically

some people don't understand the concept of liking fun, stupid music. their loss, imo.

i dont listen ironically or really listen at all. i mainly appreciate the concept and i think it could be influential. has some philosophical sides to it too.

i dont think it's music in that i don't think its listenable

Jesus, there is some proper over thinking going on in this thread.

shit loads of people have just said or implied they cant like the music because of the fans. Which is a bit sad.

is that an argument or are you just purposefully misunderstanding the point i was trying to make?

there's nothing to understand. my comment, which you were replying to, simply states that lil b is fun, stupid music. nobody's asking you to like him, or to agree with anything any of us are saying.

if you think there's seriously something to "understand" about him, you should have closed this thread and simply listened to his music to decide whether or not you like him. any "armchair analysis" on a musician, lil b included, shouldn't weigh into whether or not you like him.

and i don't know if you meant it, but this sounds pretty presumptuous. nobody's expecting you to like him—there are a number of his videos in the thread. if you listened to any of it and didn't like it...you didn't like it. that's how musical preference works.

i listened. he sucks.

he fucking sucks. done.

if he means this for real, hes a fucking idiot and he sucks.

if he is doing this for art, hes a fucking idiot, he sucks, and his fans suck.

I feel like I should clarify my POV here, even though this might not necessarily have been directed at me.

I'm ambivalent about his music - some of it is good, the majority of what I've heard isn't really to my taste, but that's neither here nor there. My comment is about his influence (potential, realized, or imagined) on mainstream hip hop. I don't believe he will influence mainstream hip hop in a major way, and his fans do not seem to be the typical hip hop listener.

That's all. His fans have no bearing on my own appreciation of the music.

I love this!!!
