i love vice documentaries (usually) but every time i binge watch their channel out of boredom i always end up feeling depressed afterwards. it's sort of a reminder how fucked up humans really are.

I think the vice films are terrible examples of documentaries - they come into the topic that they cover with preconceived notions, present a series of tropes to confirm their biases, and call it a day.

I'd have to agree. More docusploitation than anything. Still, they sure know how pick some fascinating subject matters, it's a shame they never explore them properly.

I kind of agree, even moreso now that brown-shirt bill Maher owns like 50% of the company, Rupert Murdoch also just bought a chunk.

I don't think ownership necessarily determines quality (though obviously it can have an effect). The BBC and Channel 4 for example have produced some wonderful documentaries (they've also produced some terrible ones).

I started looking at the VICE documentaries more critically after their documentary on North Korea (Vice Guide to North Korea). It's very much just an example of saying "ooh look how different these people are if we look at them through a particular lens."

I think Gocab pretty much hit the nail on the head: pick interesting topics and give them a shallow examination.

they announced recently they will be doing a regular series where they wait while a couple have sex then get a play-by-play of all the tawdry details- very much up my alley

SFW as there is no nudity just conversation about sex

bread and circuses for hipsters to make them feel good while we all fall off a cliff together

if you think their Korea one is typical jingoistic un-researched, you should check out their Sochi olympics one. Its just a nerdy frame glasses dude going around saying everything is because of corruption, extremely accusatory but presents no direct evidence of any kind to support his 'conclusions'. it's very odd.
