Riddick

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.

I'm actually looking forward to this. Yes, this new film appears to be a bit of a rehash of Pitch Black, but I've always had a soft spot for the Riddick movies (whilst it had it's failings, Chronicles had a scope to it that I enjoyed).

I think it looks good. Films don't have to be intellectual to be enjoyable. It's a straight up sci-fi action film.

i don't understand this notion tbh. if you watch a film which is insultingly stupid like this one, where everything you see is a loveless pastiche of ideas from other more-or-less stupid films... how can you sit through this? i mean why not re-watch, i dunno, Robocop, or maybe.. Tremors? even if you've seen em a dozen times, surely it'll be more enjoyable than having to digest this turd named Diesel?

this is what i wanted to know. is this movie just a remake of Pitch Black or is it just the next one in the series? in the trailer you see those alien dragon things (forget what theyre called) which makes me think its a remake.

It's the next in the series.

Pitch Black

Main article: Pitch Black (film)

In the premiere installment in the franchise Riddick is introduced as notorious convict who is en route to a penal institution with his captor, a Bounty Hunter named William J. Johns. By impersonating a cop and travelling with a group of settlers aboard a nondescript transport cruiser, the Hunter Gratzner Johns hopes to safely convey Riddick back to a prison colony and collect on the outlaw's enormous bounty. However the ship inadvertently passes through a comet's tail while on auto-pilot, forcing it to crash land on an unknown planet with three suns. Soon the survivors all find themselves fighting for their lives against a predatory species called Bio-Raptors and by the end of the film there are only three survivors: Riddick, a young girl called Jack, and Imam.

The Chronicles of Riddick

Riddick

Main article: Riddick (film)

A third Riddick movie is in development, titled Riddick. As of August 10, 2011 the production had begun casting.[2][3]

It's being financed independently.[2][3] Produced by Media Rights Capital.

The plot of Riddick will find the titular criminal still on the run from mercenaries after the bounty placed on Riddick. At some point in the film, Riddick will once again find himself on a planet teeming with unfriendly alien beasts. The beginning of the story will likely tie into the ending of Chronicles and feature cameos from characters who have appeared in the previous films. This film has been set to be released in the US on September 6th, 2013.[2][3]

I thought this thread was going to be about that Chinese kid that can see in the dark.

I only watched Pitch Black because it has Claudia Black (Aeryn Sun) from Farscape.

Riddick is the only decent role Vin Diesel has pulled off and is a character that sticks out from the usual fodder. I kinda liked the more fantasy universe explored in CoR even is it was a kinda clunky parody of the crusades.

Apparently 'Riddick' has been on the cards for a while and has been made with a lower budget than it's predecessor which might bring it back down to earth a little to focus more on characters and suspense/action scenes which made the first one stand out.
