Biosphere - Substrata (2CD / 2LP reissue)

Recommended Posts

Biosphere continues his reissue campaign with a 2CD version of Substrata. This is essentially the same as the Substrata2 double CD issue, but reverting to the original 1997 artwork, and including an extra 14 minute track, 'Laika'. Also in a much slimmer digifile sleeve, if anyone else is like me and desperate to minimise the physical size of their collection. Shipping on 6th January.

There's also a 2xLP edition which, as far as I can tell, features the original 11 track album, plus the 14 minute bonus track 'Laika'. Shipping on 20th January.

Bit odd that he's doing this after Cirque rather than before.

So I reckon we'll get Shenzhou, Autour and Dropsonde over the course of 2017. Then he'll consider doing N-Plants and decide against it.

that's what i'm hoping for (Shenzhou). actually i would love Dropsonde too.

what's not to get about ambient on vinyl? sounds warm and lush.

It's probably just because it's been reissued several times before already. Cirque is seriously underrated and I was glad to see it got reissued quite quickly after Patashnik.

I like N-Plants. In fact, just listening to it again now

Sorry to bump a really old thread here, but I recently bought the 2011 LP repress of Substrata and I'm finding it a really noisy pressing. This is with a carefully calibrated Technics SL1210MK2 and a relatively new needle and clean virgin vinyl...as in mint condition. Even after additionally cleaning the records the noise is still there. I'm quite disappointed: kinda wish I'd bought the CD version now.

Anyone else experienced this? I expect a few people bought the LP version of the represses.

See link above for details: I think there was a repress run of the LP in 2011/2015/2017

There is actually someone complaining about the same issue I'm experiencing on Discogs there.

I've sent some emails to ask about returns etc but it makes me wonder if it's a bad pressing all round so simply best to revert to getting the CD instead? Seems a shame

I suppose it's really difficult to press ambient albums onto vinyl without noise becoming too much of an issue.

This doesn't seem right though, it's pretty intrusive and annoying to hear whilst all the lushness goes on in the background. Should I bother requesting a better pressing do you think? Maybe this wasn't the best choice? :(

Just to update this. I've heard back from Biophon and they are sending me a fresh copy! They also sent me a download code for the digital files.

I've learnt from this to buy as directly as possible from an artist when you can as I presume there's better quality control and service!

Just happened to be in a record store when I saw it was all!

Nice one Biosphere.
