better time stretching/warping
by Guest Robotussin- 4 replies
hey you guys, i read that afx interview where he was talking about using ableton for time stretching and called it a "bad idea." i want something that can do what ableton does with less artifacts. i think timestretch vst might do it, but i don't think it would give me as much control with the "warping" aspect. what do you use?

Upon giving Cubase the finger
by Guest Dr. Elemeno von Hat X: PhD- 5 replies

Okay, so after talking with a few people I decided to try and get away from Cubase for a while, for workflow reasons. Trying to be more spontaneous and less obsessed with tweaking the details. The MPC thread got me thinking about my MPC 1000, and so I started messing around with using it to sequence synths. It started to click a bit, enough so that I think I will be happy using the MPC to sequence MIDI, and sample a bit. I wanted to wait and see how I liked using it for sequencing before I got more gear, and I think it'll do nicely. Now... help me pick out some stuff! Here's my current setup: - Yamaha MG16/6FX mixer: 16 channels, 4 group out + St out, basic…

acceptable and offensive RMS levels
by Guest Adjective- 16 replies

the loudness war persists and of course so does its criticism by the writers of many articles covering it. i've been thinking a lot about loudness and such while working on my album. hearing chris clark's latest, Body Riddle, got me a bit concerned with how loud i should be before offending the listener. for the most part it sounds as good as 'loud' music often does but there are moments when it starts stressing me out. music shouldn't hurt my teeth. roulette thrift run seems to stay in the -7.5 db RMS range, for example. cee-lo's Gnarls Barkley stuff is also another one that makes my ears say "jeeeez...." a lot of the tracks on there seem to hover around…

My hardware sequencer quest continues. Just found out about this puppy... Anyone got one, or do a lot of pure sequencing of hardware synths with an older MPC? What's the creative process like? If you made a track in Cubase (no softsyhths obviously), can you dump it straight to the AQQ/MPC, or does it force you to get your pattern on?

Condenser vs Dynamic Mics
by Guest The Bro- 12 replies
- 1.7k views
Knowing that condenser mics give a much better vocal in the studio but they're pricey as fuck compared to their dynamic counterparts; who can recommend a decent sounding all purpose dynamic mic for studio and live which doesn't turn a vocal into a mush of distortion and won't break the bank. I might aswell add that I use to have a very old dynamic mic (early 80s) but it broke like 5/6 years ago but I do recall recording on it and it wasn't too shit.

so, basically, i'm trying to get ableton to sync up with my 707 and 606. basically, it sends to my midi keyboard out which goes into my microkorg (this works perfectly), then my microkorg going to my 707 midi in, which is connected to the 606 with sync. On their own it works as it should, but I can't get my computer midi out to trigger my 707 and indirectly my 606. how the fuck do I do that in like ableton?

Reason Help
by Guest MMBKG- 2 replies
My boy and I are using Reason to record live drum samples played through my Axiom 25. The only thing that's bothering us is that when I play through the drumpads, it won't record on the sequencer. If you play the drums through the keyboard, it records the notes on the sequencer since the keyboard comes through Channel 1. The drumpads come through channel 10... is there any way for Reason to recognize channel 10 on its sequencer? (or at least make the drums come through a different channel)

Compressor-infidels burn in hell!
by Guest hilme- 14 replies
- 1.3k views
This is my very first post so I thought I would start off in a humble fashion. I feel stupid... and that's not something I do very often. Reading music magazines, I get the impression that expensive compressors is the most important buy I'll ever make. Still I don't hear THAT much of a difference between my friends behringer composer (is said to be low quality) and the studios SSL plugs(which are said to be quite nice). And I don't have a bad ear, I have perfect pitch and moderate studio experience. I get a slight feeling of the emperors new clothes in studio the studio world, we have all read about hip-producer-of-the-month who says theres a HUGE difference between his t…

Waveforms
by Guest eatanter- 9 replies

Hey guys, i'd really like to know what a waveform exactly represents and would like to take an in-depth look. i understand that most waveforms look fairly similar, i mean they rise and fall in a way that you can clearly hear as well. but sometimes i get these really edgy, weird waveforms that look like abstract paintings with no round curves at all, but rise and full abruptly. and they don't come from synthesizers, they're no pure square waves or anything, but mostly noises that i recorded in my room and that i've been processing heavily. or while fooling around with my fx-units (i often deliberately wire them in a way that "doesn't make sense"). sometimes there is n…

Field Recordings...
by Guest Captain Cooper- 17 replies
- 1.8k views
I would like to take some field recordings. Audio quality does not matter in the least for what I want it for, but costing less than £50 is a very important consideration. What do you think I should buy - a little tape dictaphone, some digital voice recorder, minidisk player? It has to be cheap cheap cheap, because I am cheap. If you take field recordings, what do you use? Any recommendations?

What are you people using these days to get 808 and 909 sounds? I'm looking for something that is synthesizing, not playing samples. thanks.

cheap being ~$120. i know a lot about the synth, i already have a polysix and the poly-800 and actually don't need another analogueish korg polysynth but analogue polys are hard to get here in slovenia and i guess i can trade it for something like a jx-3p with a pg-200 eventually... maybe even for a juno... so what i'm asking you - is it a fun synth? the samples i heard were really interesting, the VCF sounds really nice. are filters the same as in poly-800? how steppy is the digital filter control? how many usable waveforms out of the full 16? goddamn i need another monosynth but i keep bumping at korg polys :D
