  1. Haha, Flea's poignant lyrics have made me realized I was maybe a little too cranky with what I posted earlier. THE POINT IS, it's interesting to think about how this album was made. Arrangements aside, I think we can agree that there are no computer-based sound sources on the album, which is itself pretty awesome.
  2. Well, I thought we could actually have an interesting discussion about this, but it’s turned into another “well I think it is TOTALLY OBVIOUS” penis-measuring contest with no actual interesting points being made. Oh well. I hardly think it’s “trying to convince ourselves” of something when the artist himself has said “this is how it is”. Any discussion has to start with the actual facts, and TJ saying supposedly EXACTLY WHAT GEAR WAS USED to make the album seems like a pretty logical place to start the discussion. I’m not arguing that TJ “picked up Reaktor for the tour” at all. I’m saying it’s pretty clear that he likes to make albums with cut-down “thematic” setups of all the gear he presumably owns. It’s perfectly possible to be a Reaktor user and make an album without using it, either purposely or accidentally. Half this board has like, RDJ-PTSD, where any time any musician says anything, we automatically assume they are lying. Kind of lame, if you ask me. But oh well. Does anyone know when the Shobaleader full band tour starts?
  3. I posted in the other thread already but I agree with JE on the general substance of these questions. It’s not the sound generation or “the effects” that is unbelievable, but the edits. I agree that it seems very hard to imagine how one would trigger or arrange so many complex edits without a computer. But, that skepticism is outweighed by the fact that for whatever reason, I feel like TJ is being honest here. I mean, if he programmed Hard Normal Daddy on a DR-660, then he could certainly harness the same insane/OCD powers to… something, for Go Plastic. Also, he is so open about how the other tracks and albums were made—why wouldn’t he say that a computer was involved if one was? I feel like he’d just say it. As I mentioned in the other thread, is it possible that he could have just PLAYED the edits, kind of like doing a dub? If you listen to the “Girl” version of My Red Hot Car I think you can hear that the edits and effects are not quite as extensive as they seem like they are at first. At lot of the funky syncopations and stuff are actually in the sequencing. Anyway, I think it’s pretty clear that he used Reaktor for the Go Plastic live tour, like on the live CD and whatnot. All the grain stuff on there sounds like Reaktor to me. Also remember, it’s not necessarily that TJ wasn’t using Reaktor or a computer AT ALL during the time of GP, but that for THAT ALBUM he did not use them. Turns out, a lot of Squarepusher albums have a “gear theme” where there’s some cut-down or idiosyncratic setup involved in the recording. Think of how stripped down Hello Everything is, or all the 909 on Shobaleader One, etc.
  4. Yeah, up the Burg. Sooooo not to be “that guy” or a snob or anything, but as far as lossless ’matte + related, there are the two Trackermatte Bandcamp albums, plus Rolando Volume 1 WAVs, and… is that it? I’m probably a wanker about it but I always go out of my way to listen to lossless files if at all possible. Am I missing anything?
  5. I fucked up and didn't pull the trigger on the USB stick. Here's hoping it surfaces on BC soon.
  6. I wasn’t super keen on the album art as included so I can recommend this nice needlepoint logo: http://kandipatterns.com/images/patterns/misc/13915_Aphex_Twin_logo.png Fits the music I think.
  7. I had no idea Rbrmyofr was Skkatter either. Awesome! I think we are on the Ministry of Shit compilation together, right? Fun times. Didn't Boomkat just post that there's a Death of Rave repress out / coming out? Did someone mention that in this thread and I just missed it? Anyway, I'm not totally familiar with the original series so I don't know the details, but it should be googleable.
  8. Wow, killer pics bonervan. That thing looks awesome. I will probably have to wait and pick up the purely digital version of this, though.
  9. Oh shit hahahahaha! I love it. That's brilliant. I still haven't actually listened to these tracks at legit 96k yet… has anyone else? I mean, I listened to the tracks, but iTunes streams them down to 44 because that's as high as my MacBook goes.
  10. I for one am glad this thread turned into a srs discussion of the finer points of IDM JUSTICE
  11. Just want to make sure I understand correctly... you put uncompressed 24/96 files your phone? Again, just checking. I compressed them to Apple Lossless, but I did not SRC them.
  12. Sure thing! It's not perfect, but it will play the files. There may be better apps for the purpose, too.
  13. I grabbed an iOS app called CanOpener to play these on my phone. There's still a limit of 48kHz to what you are hearing from iOS, but CanOpener does realtime SRC instead of you having to destructively convert them to actually sync via iTunes. Decent app.
  14. My copy of this showed up today (USA)! So glad I got one. It’s too bad the Rephlex site is even more gone now than it used to be—suddenly my mind is wondering about all the other AP I could have missed, like Boom Blaster. Never got a chance to hear that one and from what I can tell it is truly no longer for sale anywhere. Let’s get some FLACs up on BC, AP!!
  15. Decent coding skills here, happy to help out with any mail merging that is needed. Also, unsure of the terms of the agreement with anyone, but if Bandcamp is used to help out with bandwidth, you could also potentially leave the album up for sale after the end of the Kickstarter campaign (this would in fact be more like the typical “fund an album/movie/etc.” Kickstarter-style release). I agree that most of the money is front-loaded but there doesn’t seem to be a harm in leaving it up to potentially generate more too.
  16. I wasn't, although that's just because I neglected to order it sooner. Saw the Bleep mailer this morning, order in. I was just because I fucking hate Paypal and had to create an account to order from AP last week. If I’d known it was gonna pop up on Blerp I would have just waited and used my big-boy credit card to order. But, not really. I think it’s awesome Aleksi is getting some press / distro / attention for this release. It makes it less WATMMSEKRET which in some ways is a bummer, but those are all selfish ways, I think. Sounds to me like this stuff deserves to be heard.
  17. Is the Arkiv a DJ stylus? I thought digitizing records is exactly what it was designed for? I'm not a huge audiophile or anything, but considering we have ZOMG ONE CHANCE TO GET IT RIGHT (seriously… we're selling the record after we rip it, right?) then yeah, let's get the best gear on it we can.
  18. If the ripper is here in the USA, I'd offer to lend out my MOTU Traveler (v1, so you need Firewire) for the rip. If that helps. It's unfortunately mostly unused at the moment. Not sure about nowadays, but back in the day the Traveler had slightly nicer converters / analog stage than the more affordable MOTU devices. MK3 may change all that though.
  19. Yes, you can limit the number of backers on Kickstarter. More on this aspect as things develop. Cool. Just wondering, not trying to criticize. Btw I edited my post to sound less like a talking side of ham
  20. Other than the desire to keep it `exclusive', which seems silly for digital vinyls, why cap it at all? Is that part up for discussion? Not only is that not very Kickstarter-y (is there even a way to limit the number of backers?) and a huge pain (and also guarantees some significant amount of piracy), but think of the windfall for the charity or whomever if it was just opened up to everyone and sold like, 100k. Especially now that it's getting "press". ??
  21. I was able to place an order for the CD/DVD set. Copies are apparently still available in case anyone else is curious. Excited!
