  1. Huge fan of Breaking Bad here, I will give it a try. It seems to go more into humor territory which is fine, because Saul can be funny.
  2. Agreed. In my circle of friends at least, online and real life, this was the biggest disappointment of an album from an artist we really looked up to, especially after what Come to Daddy and Windowlicker had delivered. I mean, for those who were there, when Come to daddy came out, it was like a revolution. Not only the videoclip, I mean the whole EP. It's the album that turned Aphex into a worldwide legend. And then, Windowlicker came out and took us all by surprise. This was new and fresh and psychedelic and like nothing else out there. Also a big fuck you to the pop industry, which was clever and just right. But then Richard lost his mp3 player on a plane and rushed into Druqks. It was like, what the hell, Aphex is only exploring drum n bass now? No more of that mellow, otherwordly tone? Only mathematical, amphetaminic, cocainoidal faster than fast programming? No more mystery? That's all you have, really? We all thought this was his less original album. It clearly followed a trend. It's like he suddenly was in competition with Squarepusher. With that said, I love many tracks on Druqks and the compositional work on some it is phenomenally complex and wow. Still listen to the album from time to time. With Syro tho, I feel like Aphex released what should have been released following Come to Daddy and Windowlicker. The warm, fuzzy, full of weird vocals, mysterious, offbeat, mind-expanding vibe is back. Apparently, Druqks was a necessary detour to get there. :)
  3. How about the production? I think this is one thing they really have pushed forward with Tomorrow's harvest. You have to play it loud to hear it tho. It has a little extra something that their previous albums didn't.
  4. Finally some positive feedback on Tomorrow's harvest... At some point I was under the impression that only new fans were enjoying the album while the old-school ones had abandoned their mythical duo. Great album!
  5. Same here! :) The whole album is fun in some way or another. Fun and melancholic. :)

  7. doesn't relate to syro, circlont14 is darker then bloody hell Your darkness is my light, then. :) You also only quote a song, I was talking about SYRO, the album. I don't think Syro is dark and evil, but it has that positive, trippy, awakening, next level non dark vibe going on. I think he's right in saying that it's so much easier to make dark and evil music in this day and age while making positive music that's not cheesy is the real challenge.
  8. An accurate description of Syro from the man himself, which explains why Syro isn't as dark as some of the stuff he put out in the past. "Also like i mention below with tunings, mankind needs as much positive/trippy/awakening/next level non dark thought provoking vibes as possible right now, we are living in a mega dark spiritual age and its 2easy to channel that into our music but I think we have to try really hard to drag ourselves out of it and dream up new mind expanding music & art, thats definitely not boring nu age yawnsville." 9. Driveclub here, quite a huge fail when it comes to online gaming (getting better these days tho) but fun nonetheless
  10. Funny, I had the same impression. :) Also during his Boiler room set, he clearly was not in a good mood. No fun at all. Some people, when they stop smoking weed after decades of doing it every day, they get uptight and moody for a while.
  11. One of the most sophisticated TV shows I've seen in a while. Intellectually stimulating, aesthetically intriguing, every scene is somptuous, the dialogues are clever, the storyline is mostly unpredictable but credible and Mikkelson has nailed it 100 %. Up there with True Detective and Breaking Bad, as far as I'm concerned.
  12. Yeah, I'm getting slightly tired of this recurring discussion. :) Sounds like everyone on here knows what a great mastering is, except Aphex Twin. How this album sounds to you is so subjective to your own experience, it has almost nothing to do with the album itself. What Aphex should release is the informations about his own audio setup so that people can hear his album the way he hears it. I'm pretty sure that by then, the same people would start complaining about Aphex Twin's quality of hearing, arguing that he should let other people hear how his music sounds before releasing it.
  13. Nice write-up :) did you send this to Fact Mag too? Because they were the ones posting it without credits? Only remark is that Aphex hasn't DJ'ed with vinyl since the early 00's. From 2002 or something he used a Vaio and from then on always used a laptop (I think mostly Mac now) Macbooks are great pieces of gear. :) I wonder what convinced him to make the switch to Apple, because he wasn't using their products in the beginning. Luke must have introduced him to the power of Mac.
  14. Thanks for sharing! SAWII is also part of my history as a teenager so your message was spot on. I was not into ambient back then, maybe some Nurse with Wound (Soliloquy) but that's it. I've heard SAWII in many different states of mind back in the day and I never managed to get bored by it. Still to this day, some of the songs almost instantly make me cry and I don't know why. They remind me of something that is not of this earth. It's like being in a womb or floating in space. When Aphex said recently that he has a full album of tape hiss, that's one of the songs I thought about. It's not a flute to me, it sounds like a universal wind breathing in and out melodies. :) Beautiful stuff.
  15. Very nice way to put it! Drukqs was pretty much in your face, a bit cocky, like "forget about my last few albums, look at how programmingly complex, varied and unpredictable I can be!" This one I feel doesn't have anything to prove, it is a lot more subtle than Drukqs. I understand it when people say it all seems the same, not enough variations, etc. It's an album that needs your full attention before it reveals itself to you.
  16. I don't know what's wrong with me, but MU4 doesn't do it for me. I mean, MU1, MU2 and MU3 are among my favourite albums, but MU4 feels underdeveloped overall. I keep coming back to it once in a while so who knows! On the other hand, I really love the Ovuca Bonus album. Some great atmospheric stuff on there. Some of it sounds like his Selected Aleksi ambient works.
  17. Let it go, mate. Leave the album away for a couple of months and come back to it with a fresh set of ears. I awlays lsiten to it with an open mind and fresh new ears. Mostly because I always fall asleep after the 5th track. When this happens to me, I usually never listen again to the album. I guess you persevere only because it's Aphex Twin?

  19. "A superior man, in regard to what he does not know, shows a cautious reserve. If names be not correct, language is not in accordance with the truth of things. If language be not in accordance with the truth of things, affairs cannot be carried on to success. When affairs cannot be carried on to success, proprieties and music do not flourish. When proprieties and music do not flourish, punishments will not be properly awarded. When punishments are not properly awarded, the people do not know how to move hand or foot. Therefore a superior man considers it necessary that the names he uses may be spoken appropriately, and also that what he speaks may be carried out appropriately. What the superior man requires is just that in his words there may be nothing incorrect." — Confucius, Analects, Book XIII, Chapter 3, verses 4-7, translated by James Legge.
  20. One Syro a day keeps boredom away. Drukqs I would always skip some tracks now and then and focus on those I found amazing, but with Syro, I just let the album play from beginning to end like I used to with his older albums.
  21. Exactly this.I love some of the tracks in it, but I have over 1k tracks to listen to... no time left for multiple listens. And I don't really feel the urge either, iunno, it's odd. Admittedly, after I wrote that I forcefully put on Syro and really enjoyed it, even to such a degree that I played it three times in a row and was humming some parts constantly at a party that night. But after that I still had hardly any urge to hear it again (but when I do...!). Like you said, there's so much good stuff to listen to. We are really spoiled basically :)I had exactly the same experience but with Druqks when it came out. Was such a massive disappointement after all the classic 90's albums. I liked it but it was blah. Took me maybe 5-10 years to fully appreciate it for what it is and to detach myself from the initial disappointment. Syro on the other hand is the album I was expecting when Druqks came out so it was an instant love affair. Drukqs blew me away when I first heard it and Syro was an instant hit for me. See, every story is unique! :)

  23. Hey guys, if you want to meet Aphex Twin's alter ego in 20th century's literature, go for the Salinger documentary on the life of J.D. Salinger, one of the most respected writers of his time who, once he got famous with his novel The catcher in the rye, completely disappeared from the public. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1596753/ I mean, couldn't Aphex have said precisely that? "There is a marvelous peace in not publishing. It's peaceful. Still. Publishing is a terrible invasion of my privacy. I like to write. I love to write. But I write just for myself and my own pleasure." Source: http://www.nytimes.com/books/98/09/13/specials/salinger-speaks.html
