Man. This is really good stuff. It’s definitely the kind of thing that I was hoping for after Congratulations (which I was a massive fan of) that we didn’t end up getting. Everything after has been cool but a bit meh, imo.

I've received the record and I have the digitals since it came out but haven't had a good listen until some days ago... what a beast of an album... love you too, death!

I think you should relisten to some of the stuff you though it was meh att... I hated congratulations on my first listens, now it's obviously obvs one of my favorites... not one single skippable song...

little dark age is my least favorite but the 3 tracks I like, I like like, love...

  1. little dark age
  2. when you die
  3. when you're small

the rest of the album I admit is quite meh...

have u guys checked this out?

https://mgmtcoveralbum.bandcamp.com/

I couldn't stand alien days when it came out but I've gave it a shot again and there's really brilliant stuff in there... the songs/production is too dense, so much to dig in, I kind of get the news back in the day stating that it was influenced by afx... it's not very acoustic, and it's definetely not poppy... it's very experimental in its own way... lots of electronic stuff going on... but yeah the production overall kind of makes it sound a bit muddy...

edit 1: I'm only posting this here cause apparently all the old threads about their albums are archived... 🤷

edit 2: this 11.11.11 is brilliant, like, brilliant, like, genius!!! like, genius!!! ffs it's immense!!!

btw, here are the threads so that we can remind ourselves of how clueless some of us (me included) were about the potential of this band…

Agreed. I got the blue vinyl for Christmas and love it. Better than anything else since Congratulations (which I was obsessed with shortly after its release), by far. Amazing that it’s only recently getting a release.
I’m having higher hopes for the new full length than I’ve had in a while .

I’m happy to say that my content was largely supportive, early on.
FWIW, I was a huge of Montreal fan back in the day and saw mgmt open for them at a bar in Brooklyn prior to oracular spectacular. They had “MGMT” spray painted on a bedsheet behind them and were wearing all white and sunglasses and I remember thinking “these kids are trying to be like the new Wham.”

haha me too... tried to listen to them recently and was kinda disappointed...

Oh dude. How far they’ve fallen.

Spoiler

I saw them live more than any other band. 13 times between ≈2001 and say ≈2011? At some point I had to throw in the towel because it just wasn’t as catchy and melodic and all of the lyrics were just pretentious/obnoxious. Although, Lousy With Sylvianbriar is a fabulous album.

imo, everything prior to satanic panic is fucking golden. I was just listening to Coquelicot as a whole again the other day and fuck me if that’s not one of the most ingenious records ever recorded.

I still think Kevin has some amazing albums left in him but he just needs to pull his head out of his ass.
