I dig on some MGMT, but I am usually suspicious of anyone that says their new sound was influenced by Aphex Twin.

We'll see.

For the record, I thought "Congratulations" was an incredible album.

I hated Congratulations - not bad, just forgettable, IMO. Oracular Spectacular was far superior with many strong tracks. I sometimes wonder how much of these "influenced by" mentions are just that - a vague mention by a band working on a album, and it's the journos that over-inflate the influence.

"Influenced by" is far less of a red flag that "sounds like" imo, even if it seems a subtle difference. I prefer when musicians talk about why they feel influenced or inspired by another artist or musicians - seems a lot more sincere, especially if their own work is very much different. Their statement is too brief for me to form an opinion.
