I guess we have never listed them in appreciation order... I know this thread is unoriginal, meanwhile I am curious to know what everybody prefers. The allowed LPs are:

Incunabula (1993)

Amber (1994)

Tri Repetae (1995)

Chiastic Slide (1997)

LP5 (1998)

Confield (2001)

Draft 7.30 (2003)

Untilted (2005)

As of the EPs (I excluded Basscad EP because Autechre didn't make the tracks, technically):

Anti (1994)

Anvil Vapre (1995)

Garbage (1995)

Cichlisuite (1997)

Envane (1997)

EP7 (1999)

Peel Session (1999)

Peel Session 2 (2000)

Gantz Graf (2002)

Here are the LPs I prefer from best to worst:

Confield > Chiastic Slide > Draft 7.30 > LP5 > Tri Repetae > Untilted > Amber > Incunabula

I have never listened their EPs often enough for rating them in order, though.

  • LP5 > Confield > Tri Repetae > Incunabula > Amber > Untilted > Draft
  • Garbage > Anvil Vapre > EP7 > Gantz Graf > Anti

anything not listed, I havent heard yet. (I will get round to listening to Chiastic someday)

Perhaps this forum should have the same kind of mini tournament Fred is holding in AFX Phorum?

i like them all in order (incunabula best), but untilted comes before draft 7.30 (but the difference between each album is so small that i may aswell not even bother commenting on which order i like them best)

same goes for ep's

it seems im weird.

i so nearly like them all the best.

i know though, that it in time, i will come to appreciate the later albums more. i like them more each time i listen to them.

i have only been a proper autechre fan for just over a year now. and i started on incunabula.

1st String Albums: LP5, Amber, Draft, Chiastic

2nd String Albums: Tri Repetae, Untilted, ep7

3rd String Albums: Incunabula, Confield

I equate listening to Confield with getting totally shitfaced, in that I only do in occasionally to remind meself why I don't do it more often.

EANDN keeps bugging me to.

I'LL DO IT SOME TIME A'RIGHT

I dont see how Confield is supposedly "difficult".

If anything, Draft is harder to listen to. I cant stand it.

Yea, Confield was immediate for me. But Draft was one of the few Ae releases that I had to listen to more than once to "get". I suppose people just say that because Draft is more about fully composed songs, and Confield is more of abstract moments, or jams.

But lol wtf caustic go buy Chiastic immediately and get your booty shakin to some cipater.

I dunno man. Alot of the Draft tracks sorta sound like Cfern or Bine remixes to me.

Stretchy bass, out of time minimalist percussion. Just never interested me really.

Agh, I would Rook but it's cold outside :(

very cold..

I'm surprised to see Incunabula so high on some people's lists... interesting too that if it's not on top, it's pretty much at the bottom.

I think that compositionally it lacks the subtlety of ANY other release of theirs. Even the Basscad remixes are much more advanced. The mood is beautiful, but compared to their other really melodic, minimal material like Garbage or Tri Repetae, it feels too... looped. With Garbage or Tri Repetae you can really feel the way some of it was recorded in real time... there's a lot of spontaneous variation going on that keeps things interesting.

Oh, and here's my list... note that I haven't heard Amber or Draft 7:30, though they're on the way right now...

Confield>Chiastic Slide>Untilted>Tri Repetae>EP7>LP5>Incunabula

Confield just has the most amazing flow from beginning to end... This was a hard ranking to do. LP5 might look low on the list, but I love it. I love all of them, pretty much.

Garbage>Gantz Graf>Cichlisuite>Envane>Anvil Vapre>Anti

Garbage is one of the most emotionally intense experiences there is.

I'd agree there except the second and third tracks just don't come anywhere close to garbagemx and v.ltr

I agree, Garbage might be Autechre's only EP I'm really into.

I really like We R Are Why but Splitrmx12 is probably the boringest autechre ever.

Also, Amber and Garbage are awesome, so step off h8terz

I'd say only Piobmx is a little weaker. Bronchusevernmx might be minimal, but it really gets to me... haunting song. Beautiful sounds, too.
