I have no choice in the matter. San Antonio or bust! I may try and find a weekend place to rent in Austin so I can just disappear up there every weekend, though I usually work Saturdays :/

I will say the best, and freshest, mexican food I've ever had was in a little family run restaurant in New Mexico about 8 years ago. It was so delicious and pwned every NC mexican effort.

edit: It was also super cheap!

Yeah San Antonio is alright, it's cheap, less humid that H-town, and close enough drive to a lot of places. It's hard to get a place to rent in Austin under normal circumstances but the drive up on the weekends is fine...unless there's a UT game in which case I-35 is FUBAR.

SA is considered less Humid than Houston? I guess the only times I've ever been to SA were during the summer so it felt either the same or more humid to me. But I've only spent a couple of days there at a time, so I'm no authority. I'm just surprised to hear that.

Well, I am used to north S.A., i.e. Randolph AFB, north loop area. It's hot as hell but dry, maybe it's b/c higher up and north of the city, whereas South and central is muggy.

I dunno, I lived in Okinawa, Japan and that was just insanely humid, so I don't know either. :emotawesomepm9:

oh just stop that. maryland tex mex is not adequate if you've had actual tex mex. that's like being content with texas crab cakes. funnily enough the best crab cake i've ever had was in texas. but you have to be in texas. you have to have the heat and the air more than anything.

pros:

tex mex

swimming

trips to austin

cheap land

that's about it. i dont miss it. i miss some of the people. otherwise it's hot, flat, and people try to run over you in their pickups.

Yeah, Austin Hall is where old people see Van Morrison or Willie Nelson. During SXSW they have the awards show and badge only events where pretentious A&R folks congratulate each other.

SXSW isn't normal, so artists play all over, but in general:

La Zona Rosa - "bigger" indie and rock acts, I've seen Mastadon and MF Doom here

The Parish - Another one to see well-known indie acts. Four Tet, Prefuse, and about every underground hip-hop show I've seen in ATX.

Emo's - has at least 3 stages at SXSW, two indoor and one outside. Usually DJ sets by hipster-friendly acts (DFA records, Simian Mobile Disco for example), Pitchforkmedia.com has their events here.

Flamingo Cafe - any dub, reggae, dancehall likely here.

Stubb's - outdoor stage usually has good free shows and bigger indie acts

Plush - I dunno about SXSW, but this is the main club in town where DJs play good electronic sets and not billboard top 40 hip-hop

Mohawk - saw Telefon Tel Aviv here, so I'd check it out

Red Eye Fly, Red 7, anything on 6th or Red River street...lot of small punk/indie venues

South Congress - usually a lot of indie acts play free shows at resturants and cafes on this street

I'm sure I forgot one. All you really need to do is go to showlistaustin.com and browse the RSVP events for the evening or find a free day show you like. Otherwise just walk around 6th street downtown, they literally shut down the street and musicians and fans just walk around. I randomly stood next to David Cross and James Iha, they were literally just walking around watching bands play.

Don't leave out Barcelona! Mad Classy dubstep on Sundays. No idea who's coming through for SXSW though.

--

Anyway, posting in an older thread. I assume you're hear in the Lone Star State already? Welcome. Enjoy SXSW. I live right next to downtown, so I'll be bikin' it up next week. XD

Warp_SXSW_480.jpg

and it gonna be hot! along with a lot of other sxsw badass madness....

all of the bands/artists I would love to potentially see are : Nice Nice, Flying Lotus, Eprom, Hudson Mohawke, Pivot, Born Ruffians, Eskmo, High On Fire, Acid Mothers Temple, Holy Fuck, 12th Planet, Liars, Dosh, Gaslamp Killer, Tobacco, Themselves, Sun Araw, Yppah, Anti Pop Consortium, Daedelus, Thurston Moore, This Will Destroy You, and Death

but I will only see a handful of them....

Texas is hot but fun, at least Austin is....

awesome restaurants in and around Austin: Matt's El Rancho, Kreutz's in Lockhart, El Chile, Uchi, Kerbey Lane, Phoenecia, The Tamale House on Airport Blvd, Casino El Camino, Madam Mam's and many others...

too many cool clubs and bars to name: The Mohawk, The Parish, Plush, Barcelona, Creekside, Beerland, Shangri La, the Jackelope, Lovejoy's, Emo's

so much good music rolls through that I can't keep up with nearly enough of it...

Hope it works for you...

It does get fucking hot though....

I'm planning on doing some shows, but also hoping I'll be able to get a band together too, as it's been quite difficult in NC if for no other reason, all the good drummers are already in bands. Which i'm sure is likely still the case in Austin.

And great maker, I most likely am not far from a clinical diagnosis of insanity. However, granted I have a day job, I am a musician, lover of beaches, pot, and big cities. So California is kinda up my alley. I also do not like the cold (ruling out NYC most of the year).

California is definitely up your alley. And if you moved here (L.A. area) I'd say let's jam!

Good luck in Texas though! The Riverwalk is highly recommended, that is all I know.

Hot damn. Can you get in without a badge to this show?

Probably not if it gets full of badges, but there will be a door fee...a hefty one most likely

Crap. I worked SXSW last year and had a Sound Crew badge that got me everywhere. It ruled. Now I have to go to free shows and/or spend money. :(

for anyone going to SXSW, In The Nursery are doing a live soundtrack to the silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc and fuck i would love to go, but betting badges will fill it up (i'm sure they will pick a small theater for this one). still, once in a lifetime.
