People may have noticed me posting similar "newbie" topics in several sub-forums-For that I apologise!

As of yet I haven't actually heard anything from Squarepusher (at least, not that I can remember).

Anyway, i feel like buying some new (to me) music on impulse*

I saw Vic Acid for €5.65

Would it be suitable "beginner" release? Or would it be better to spend a bit more? Sorry to seem like a stinge....I'm a student without a job :p

*granted, it's not really impulse as such, just buying something without sampling it.

like I said;

Well, I am buying a couple of other things. But shipping is a bit expensive so I want to bulk up my order to make it worth while. (I can add about 3 more things before shipping does up, so I'm trying to pick 3 new things). Normally I would, but I have dial up Internet for two weeks.

eh...i'd check out the thread that MAXIMUS MISCHIEF made. there were some good suggestions there.

but yea, buy it. not the best place to start, but i'll just safely assume you can handle it

where was that topic? I might be blind but I couldn't find it....(might be cause i'm on the iPhone version ofthis site)...

Where have you been seeing these records? A online store?

Yeah, a couple actually. One which has a new Zealand version (I think it's based in Switzerland) and has free shipping. And another from Poland which is really cheap with most things, but has expensive shipping....

If you're going to pay a bit more for overseas shipping get Hard Normal Daddy, you can also get Selection Sixteen for cheap, it's a hugely underrated record because it's more of a compilation, it contains an extra track by his brother Ceephax that I consider one of his best to date.

Check ebay too: http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3984.m570.l1313&_nkw=selection+sixteen&_sacat=See-All-Categories

vic acid ep is a weird way to start with squarepusher to be honest. it's like hearing aphex the first time through, eh, AB4 or something. start with one of the well known albums. hard normal daddy, hello everything, big loada, feed me weird things etc.

yea, then it'll only make you more curious as to what else there is to hear on lesser known releases

I've decided to spend a little more.

The most recommended ones have been ;

Feed Me Weird Things

Hard Normal Daddy

Go Plastic

Big Loada

Hello Everything

Selection 16

(counting the other thread as well).

Would anyone care to describe the difference in sound between the 6 (if that's not too much to ask)?

Also, FMWT seems to unnavailable to buy anywhere....is it out of print?

I think it would be a little difficult to describe the difference between all 6 without writing (a rather boring) essay.

FMWT is out of print but available if you have access to on-line second hand retailers (Discogs).

Why don't you look up the reviews section on amazon.co.uk or amazon.com (U.S version)? This is a good way of understanding how an album might sound. There are usually lists made by fans etc. Click on the gold stars for joe publics opinions.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dpopular&field-keywords=squarepusher&fsc=-1&x=12&y=19

The American version is the same. I find these useful and handy, and then you can stop badgering us LoL.

Feed Me Weird Things - I'd say this or Hello Everything is the best place to start. a lot of drum n bass. some very lovely, some kinda ugly and weird, and some that are downright rough. it's a pretty good amount of variation if you'd prefer that.

Hard Normal Daddy - Comparable to FMWT, but a lot warmer and much funkier. really jazzy in some spots. his music started getting a lot faster by this point

Hello Everything - Loaded with melodies, easily the nicest and easiest to get into if you wanna start simple. nothing really reaches that line of "challenging listening", not that it's a bad thing. it's a very good album.

Go Plastic - balls to the wall abrasiveness and mindnumbing power.

Big Loada - Another record with a lot of variation. some tracks that could suit older albums, some that could suit his later albums. not a bad place to start either

Selection sixteen - his weirdest out of all of these imo. i wouldn't say it's a necessary album, but fun to listen to after getting used to him overall.

  • 1 year later...

I picked up Vic Acid on 12" with a very good condition purple warp sleeve for £1. Never heard these tracks before, all very nasty. I like the track with the noisy screech outro bit on it...! Bargain. 15 years old too.....
