Skin Scratches

Every day i discover new scratches on my body. They just look like the typical superficial wounds you can get when you go into the forest, but I don't go in the forest anymore. It has been so since the beginning of the summer and I wasn't paying much attention until recently, but now that i have a scratch on my ass i think i have some serious troubles. Also, I've been told I must have pretty wicked dreams as sometimes i can emit "the most horrifying shouts" : yeah basically I cry like a madman for a good minute, but I can never remember any dream (or nightmare).

Could it be possible that i scratch myself when asleep ?

Also i have a cat, but he's cool.

please explain

are you biting your nails ?

I do and i have those half-skin half-nail protuberances on the side of my fingers. I wonder if they could be the source of the Nighlty Claws.

I think it's just you scratching yourself at night while you're unconscious. Try taking a bath or shower before bed, and changing your linens to make sure you're not scratching due to being dirty or having any sort of infestation in your bed. Flip and rotate your mattress as well.

let me search this for you

Let me begin with introducing my Neurological record, hoping it will be of some use:

1. Two grand-mal seizures (one in the age of ten, during sleep; second when I was 22).

2. Sleep paralysis seizures since I was 15 (usually when I wake up from daytime sleep).

3. Minor delayed-sleep disorder.

The only thing I have not yet been able to understand, is my self inflicted scratches. Once in about one or two months, I get up in the morning and find, usually on my face, arms or chest, a deep scratch or scratches. I can't remember when it has started, but it must have been years back, maybe since the age of 16-17. Those scratches happen to me also when I sleep alone (which I usually do). I have tried to inflict the same bruises to myself while I am awake, and I've never succeeded in doing so. It's as if I use some extraordinary strength to inflict them upon me while I'm asleep.

I know this sounds like a joke, but please believe me - it's true. I have already talked to a neurologist about this, and she thought I was fooling her. Those scratches are real, no doubt.

Could it be linked to some psychological disorder?

Anders

The reference I saw is in "Sleeping Soundly" by Ambrogetti, and it was to "frontal lobe epilepsy". Starts in childhood or adolescence, may be genetic, EEGs don't show any epilectic brain activity except during seizures.

The motor activity can be fairly small, such as stroking the nose or waving the arms, or can be more major. The characteristic of this type of epilepsy is that the activity is repetitive, and always the same, night after night.

Nocturnal seizures are a strong possibility and I think that is what flubdub is saying. He also mentions REM Behavior Disorder which is acting out your dreams while asleep. For this to be the case, and it could be, your dreams would all indicate the need to scratch. Most people with this disorder injure themselves by getting out of bed and running into something (etc). In their dream they are running and when they wake up, after hitting an object, they remember the dream. They do not always injure themselves and usually don't seek help until they do.

See a sleep specialist.

also people on above top forum mentioned (among the usual ghosts and aliens) possible artefacts that could cause such scratches : feathers, zippers, etc... There is nothing like this in my bed.

Finally,

I scratch my vagina while I sleep

I only mention it as you would be shocked, regardless of heritage, race, or gender, at some peoples' ideas of hygiene. While you might not mind going to bed sweaty or only change your linens once every few months, others might find it offensive.

That, and you're French, so it went without saying :emotawesomepm9:

I kid, I kid!
