Capsaicin
So, WATMMm, lets talk about Jazz for a little bit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbEwVrDmlxk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TDDr9dzjew&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcIph0O_tnw&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLdm1yuoU_Q I'm only now starting to fully appreciate jazz music. I'm finally feeling comfortable and I'm now reveling in the large amount of good music. I'm planning on driving around to a bunch of record stores tomorrow and buying a bunch of classic jazz albums. Post your favorites etc etc.

Guest thepilot
One would not only need to be unfamiliar with jazz but actively seeking refuge from it in order to not have heard of Kind of Blue or Love Supreme. Those are good / great records of course but anyone whose read or even glanced through a music publication or spied some critic's "best of" within the last forty years will know what Kind of Blue is. This is interesting too because I came to that record rather late in my exploration of jazz and by that time I'd absorbed so much of the hype that I was on the borderline of meh upon first listen. Anyway Jack De Johnette's De Johnette Complex is an interesting record. De Johnette is a hell of a drummer and he incorporates a melodica all over that record. His original compositions are challenging but in the end a rewarding listen in my opinion. I also like Ornette Coleman. He wrote that piece for an orchestra using his harmonizing technique (harmolodics I think?), Skies of America. I love that. It is not really your standard issue 'jazz' record I guess, but it's interesting at least to hear the interplay between the orchestral tympani in one channel and a jazz drumkit in the other! It's really quite intense and the concept itself is pretty wild but he pulled it off damn well. You never really hear about that album, (it's dissonant as fuck but not a full on free jazz freak out by any means).

Guest all_purpose_sandpaper
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C84KmJwtPeI Ahmad Jamal is definitely one of the all time keyboard greats. His trio was always tight as a drum. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_0DkzkW12U&playnext=1&list=PL2B04E4C02CA50747 A live example from 1971. Nasser has such a great bass tone on the above. The backing seems to play with the billowing echo of Jamal's Rhodes.
Guest Hanratty
you can save yourself a lot of time by just getting some Sun Ra and listening to it until you like it. He's the best because he's from outer space.
