80's pop cheese thread?

Recommended Posts

I'm attempting to start a thread for 80's cheesy pop stuff- both the kind that's still awesome, and the kind of stuff that's surely best left forgotten. For some reason I've had a small obsession with watching some of these wack ass 80's videos lately and trying to find all of the songs that were there when I was a kid, and hear them at least one last time. I don't know why. I probably shouldn't do that.

The fuck were these guys thinking?

If this type of thread already exists, I'm sorry.

If it doesn't I'm also sorry.

My theory about this one- cocaine. Probably all of them actually.

Probably still one of teh best videos.

anyway if nobody contributes i'll just go back under my rock for a while. which will be for the better probably..

i think that concept is maybe a little too specific. i didn't specify that you had to hate the songs.

how many people are going to have tons of songs that they literally once hated but now love? i can't think of one example myself.

also you didn't specify 80s.

basically i'd like to see a vintage 80s cheese-fest.

but they are similar topics.

Does it count if I genuinely love the song? :emotawesomepm9:

yeah basically anything goes as long as it's 80s and pop and/or kinda cheesy, and especially if it has awesome synths/drum machines in it! and i've never heard this track but it's kinda sweet!

Tears for Fears fucking rule - especially Head over Heels!

wow i completely forgot all about this one! AWESOME

I can get on board for this...

RE: pure energy

never saw that vid that i remember. guy looks like he might have misplaced his anti-psychotic meds or something.

some classic stuff being posted so far.

movie tie-ins!

i'm doing the RIGHT thing here, linking to clip of just the song, NOT the atrocious video made for it. some of her stuff was as strong an example there is of something that could have only came from the 80s, and some it's hard to believe even exists at all (e.g. aforementioned video).

and this. released just before 80s, but hey, the guy helped pioneer this stuff. maybe not 'cheesy' either, but i love it.

I've only recently discovered this song. It's awesome!

I genuinely love 80s pop. I listen to it almost on a daily basis. Here are some favourites:

Jerry Harrison, of Talking Heads fame:

This track sounds like most early 90s demo scene MOD files, except made in the 80s (especially the middle section):

Nik Kershaw has some amazing songwriting skills:

The chorus of this reminds me of Cocteau Twins for some reason:

And who can forget, the king of ridiculously awesome production, Peter Gabriel. Listen to that fucking snare! Pop perfection:

this video from 1989 was a magical way to finish the decade

RE: liberian girl vid

a little (lot) too celeb porn for my taste. that's like straight up celeb bukkake on the viewer's eyes. LOOK AT US WE'RE FAMOUS AND YOU AREN'T! but different strokes...

anyway i'm more about

I'm old - I lived through the 80's and there are so, so many great pop tracks from that period that I could easily post a hundred here. In many ways I think this was the last wave of true innovation in pop music, after this everything has been recombinations of elements established from 1950 - 1990

So here's the first thing off the top of my head, I saw these guys live in Pittsburgh opening for the Thompson Twins around '83 or '84. The sounds in the intro are from the PPG Wave, my all-time favorite synth.

i wasn't trying to compare threads in any way, it was just my 2 cents...

Here's an obscure one - these guys were friends of mine when we all lived in Erie, Pennsylvania. They were signed to a major label (Columbia, I think) in the mid 80's, moved to LA and released one album and two videos. This was their 2nd single - "One Simple Thing".

P.S. After their album and tour did not sell well they both went to work for Euphonix.

A: how can you have a thread titled "80's pop cheese" without including pop muzik

(ok technically from 1979, but come on)

B: no one better be frontin on Oran' Juice Jones. One of my all time favorite tracks.

Does it count if I genuinely love the song? :emotawesomepm9:

I gave you things you couldn't even pronounce!
