Electronic/Experimental music blogs/press/radio in non-white countries

Hi watmm,

i just spent a bunch of time and energy doing promotional blasts for various upcoming releases and in doing so I realized just how much I've omitted or neglected regions of the world that aren't white. I wouldn't say it has been overtly racist of me, it's just far easier to find contacts (mostly in english) for other places. I want to change this. I've heard of thriving scenes in various countries I'm about to list but don't really know how to find an online or other presence.

This is a call out to anyone who knows of press, radio or blog resources in Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea, Lebanon, India, Iran, Turkey, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan, Burma, Panama, Peru, Venezuela, Columbia, South Africa, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Ethiopia and any other obscure country you can think of that has interesting music resources.

Any help appreciated. And just so this doesn't seem totally self serving, adding to this list could just be a valuable resource for music fans in general.

edit: If someone reading this is a blogger, press or radio person living in any of these countries please say hello in this thread!

There are no blogs for experimental sounds in india (that I'm aware of) since there's virtually no scene for that kind of music here. The closest thing would probably be wild city which occasionly covers 'edm' gigs and releases, but that's mostly restricted to club sounds. Im honestly curious to know how many RlR releases you've managed to sell in india.

pin-to musica: located in macau, china

There are no blogs for experimental sounds in india (that I'm aware of)

india: contact sougata bhattacharya: he lives in france but has performed many times in india some kind of experimental electronic music. maybe he has the necessary contacts

also try http://www.orka-m.com/institute/ at http://orka.muse@gmail.com they're no longer based in india (they moved to singapore) but they'd probably be able to point you in the right direction

hong kong: http://sin-ned.blogspot.com/ is a freelance writer, sonic junkie, improviser and member of no one pulse.

kuwait: http://post-avantist.tumblr.com/ electronic/noise artist based in kuwait. his website seems to be down but if anyone knows what's happening around his neck of the woods, it's him. he's also got free noise music links to his work

i will try and give you a better list tomorrow when i'm more awake. sorry these are not the actual zines, but some of these countries tend to write in their native language and thus, useless to us english speaking natives. the guys whose contacts i've given are nice people and if they can't help, will just be happy to hear from a fellow electronic music artist

Hi, it's been almost 2 years since I made this thread and I thought I'd resurrect it given we have a ton of new membership on watmm, noticed some new folks from japan and other parts of asia. Nebraska, would you still be willing to put together a more comprehensive list? I can send you a bunch of music

middle east/lebanon:

xardas/seeker/osman arabi: runs obscure abominations and in the group ritual inclusion of code. will be your best bet for middle eastern contacts/distro etc.

http://www.osmanarabi.com/ + http://osmanarabi.blogspot.com/p/contact.html

china:

torturing nurses: http://site.douban.com/mtdm/

http://facebook.com/torturingnurseforever

http://twitter.com/torturingnurse

also check out http://douban.com/host/noishanghai although they might be impossible to communicate with unless you speak cantonese/mandarin. ask philippe petit of http://www.pandemoniumrecords.com/ based in france how to reach these guys

thailand, vietnam, indonesia, singapore:

facebook.com/ehsanrecords

facebook.com/litheparalogue

these are the only contacts i know for the above regions. i'm not sure if they're interested in work outside of these regions but it never hurts to try. at the very least, maybe you can have a contact incase you feel like doing a show in those areas

japan:

ned's

7 Chome-1-7 Nishishinjuku, Shinjuku, Tokyo 160-0023, Japan +81 3-5330-0718

http://www.neds-records.com/

big love records

150-0001 Tokyo, Shibuya, Jingumae, 2 Chome−31−3, 宝栄ビル3FA +81 3-5775-1315

http://www.bigloverecords.jp/index_shop.html

these two are shops but possibly the best places to do promo or find distro outside or the actual labels. check the english version of each page and (i hate to tell you) these guys are best contacted in person (i.e. walk into the store)

chile (santiago):

pro-death: http://pro-death.com/nbp/distro.html

contact info on the website. will probably handle most of the latin american region besides ecuador (contact there seems to have quit the scene and is now only selling hardware: http://ecuadorstore.tumblr.com/

canada (montreal/ottawa area):

ruido latino will distro your work. check their catalogue @ http://latinoruido.blogspot.ca/

I've always wondered this: despite the genre being more about 'the sound' than 'the personality behind the sound' how come it is such a white (& mainly male) dominated scene ?

good question, but the truth is, it isn't just white (& mainly male) dominated. what is, is the western electronic and experimental music scene. most regions around the world have electronic based experimental music, but it's difficult to categorize as such (at least from a western point of view because it sounds like traditional music that's been electronically produced and treated).

eg. african electronic & experimental music is hard to track down (mostly because that region does have a good distribution and audience for such music) but you should check out http://www.awesometapes.com/ paricularly this attention to this release which is, imo, is afronoise at it's purest form

Adding to this, I think when it comes to means of making music, i.e. equipment, distro, and audience, context and history are everything, and in many places outside of the Europe and USA, and former commonwealth countries (AUS, CAN, NZ, etc.) there's a large presence of club and dance music instead. Raves are quite a global phenomenon, and there have been healthy and unique dance music scenes and genres in the developing world: baile funk in Brazil, kwaito in South Africa, dancehall in Jamaica, etc. These just often don't have much in the way of physical releases nor a lot of aspiring producers, as they are really heavy on DJs and their sound systems as outlets for music. So they're not really oriented toward experimental nor "bedroom listening" electronic.

Some very cool stuff here. Curious to hear some music from those areas. I know that Russia is mostly white, but I've heard some interesting stuff coming from a few places there.

I don't what it is about Russia but I've noticed they have a pretty healthy electronic producer community in just about every genre. Japan is similar in that regard as well. They are different though...this sounds so stereotypical / un-P.C. but Japanese producers and scenes tend to emulate and elaborate really well, often in a very clinical and precise manner. Russians almost sound like they are reverse-engineering it to their own regional styles (especially with future bass / uk garage...guys like Volor Flex, VVV, Ghostek are all very Burial-esque but with enough of their own twist to sound unique). It's often more "rough" and less subtle in sound...i.e. kids with pirated software and downloaded samples.
