the only tracks you need to know:

This genre was pretty huge in Netherland and Belgium from mid to late 90's. The word "gabber" is actually a Dutch word meaning pal or buddy. It's what those who listened to that type of music called themselves, effectively ruining the word forever. They called the genre "hardcore" but because that clashed with a punkrock genre I can understand why people refer to it as "gabber" now. A real 'gabber' used to shave his head and wear tracksuits or a bomber jacket. They usually spend their days dancing to the music in a style they called "hakken" (chopping), or being casually to uncomfortably racist. A female version of a gabber was called a 'reefteef' (ravebtich, sounds better in dutch because it rhymes) who also had distinctive hair and clothing styles.

Can't say i'm a fan of that bouncy, thunderdome-y type stuff, but if you haven't got thoroughly absorbed in their work already then definitely check out Hellfish & Producer - the true kings of big kicks!

This track is one of their best imo

Yeah that album is masterful! Suppose this sort of stuff is probably more generally defined as hardcore than 'GABBA' really..

Here's another Hellfish track in a similar vein to that Non Standard Procedure one in case you hadn't heard it before

Cheeky bit of Ely Muff too - sums up that London sound for me

Gabber shouldn't need to be explained. Its mostly just fast, fun music that makes you bounce around like a fool. I know there are sub-genres that take the fun out of it and make it darker, but basically the essence of the stuff is that its fast and predictable and it makes you dance.

Best gabber (gabba?) sets I have experienced:-

Hellfish & The Producer at Glade Festival (2006?)

Tim Exile @ Bangface (elektrowerkz 2006?)

Captain Ahab @ Bangface (elektrowerkz 2008)

Some of the acid techno stuff gets close to gabber speeds - Rowland the Bastard plays relentless acid techno that kicks the ass out of it.... I was present for this and it was fucking awesome:-

I'm kinda weirdly fascinated by these predominantly Russian rave pyramids.

Piramide al number one 01/06/2011:

There are quite a few videos on YouTube but this one is quite good quality. Obviously these people have all gone to dance at this rave and not form moshpits and human sculptures. Bizarre but intriguing to watch.

This one is cool too, the mc seems to be actively encouraging it...

number one extreme 12-03 2011 finale:
