  1. Ok. We get it. Stop showing off already. (wife still says no)
  2. "If you owe the bank a thousand dollars, you have a problem. If you owe the bank a million dollars, the bank has a problem."
  3. Nah, militarily they can’t hold a candle to the US. No one can. It’s more the other way around, really. If the US, even in its present weakened state, hadn’t been there, China would probably be even more aggressive in the Chinese South Sea than it is now. Might’ve even have run over Taiwan already. Economically and diplomatically, however, it’s quickly starting to become number one. USA second. And Holland down to #3 ?
  4. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Claus_(sculpture) Similar sculpture in Rotterdam. Don’t know if it was revealed in the same way, though.
  5. It’s more nuanced for the US as well. Some states may be (vastly) richer than others, but part of that wealth comes from selling resources extracted from the poorer states. Probably not an insignificant part either.
  6. There's very little GAS that can't be cured either by waiting a week or two or by sitting down behind a computer and downloading an M4L tool or two. (said the man who owns half a dozen monos, including a Eurorack setup - do as I say, not as I do)
  7. Finished season 3 of Babylon Berlin. Started off a bit slow, the ending was a bit very convoluted, but the ride itself was well worth it. Lots going on, historically interesting time period (Germany, 1929), awesome set and costume design. Already looking forward to season 4. Next up is Kingdom, I think. A Korean series that supposedly wraps social commentary in fancy costumes and throws in zombies. Intriguing.
  8. The clapping thing has me furious. The same people who clap for health care are the people that for ten years have been voting for the party that has has been making cuts in health care budgets, to the point where at the height of the crisis people had to be sent to IC units in Germany, and that will do it again at the next election because the prime minister looks so good on tv.
  9. Not at the same time, I hope.
  10. Welcome to the club. The dumb losers club. The dumb losers of money club. Also, if you’re interested in Maths but think it’s a bit expensive, check out the Doepfer A-171-2. In a way it’s like half of a Maths. It definitely is very versatile. AND it has a bit of a Serge sound to it because, well, it’s a Serge design: http://www.doepfer.de/a1712.htm
  11. My wife says no. We would have to buy a car because you can’t really carry gas tanks on a bike and we’re not going to buy a car just to eat pizza once a week and restaurants have opened again so just go there if you want to eat pizza or some nonsense like that. ?
  12. That is *awesome*.

    Dead souls is, indeed, hilarious.
  14. If his really is an Italian made tuxedo the maker should be ashamed of himself. The fit is horrendous.
  15. Neural networks need sleep: https://www.discovermagazine.com/technology/why-artificial-brains-need-sleep Well, sort of. Headline’s a bit overblown. What it boils down to is that you need to feed random noise (which this article calls “sleep”) to machine learning systems to “teach” them that not very signal you feed them contains relevant information. This is not news. Still, I’d never thought about it in these terms. In some ways the analogy really does hold: systems that process information autonomously really do need to be cailibrated every now and then to prevent them from seeing information where there is none* and in living organisms we call this “sleep”. * such as conspiracies
  16. A bit larger than A4 (some weird water color block size)
  17. On something of a Buster Keaton binge. Saw The Scarecrow (1920): Starts off with an amusing take on the old tooth + wire + door gag. Then goes into a fantastically bizarre breakfast scene with involving contraptions Rube Goldberg would’ve been proud of. After that, it calms down a little and settles into a thoroughly entertaining set of chase scenes. One of his better ones. ?
  18. Probably a generational thing, but, yes, my wife never really got over the crush she had on him in high school
  19. Tried to visit WATMM this morning and succeeded.
  20. Great. Now I had to work. Thank you, Obama.
