almost unknown strategy games

ORB (Off-world Resource Base) - shit name for a game, fairly decent space strategy shit though. genuinely awesome ambient music

The Outforce - another random space strategy, with music in the same vein as C&C but much better done and with more of a mysterious twang

Ah, some of the most beautiful, most underrated pieces of music ever written can be found on video games. I have a big list of tracks I would like to make cover versions of some day, when I have more music skillz.

Here, they're all good:

The Eel Deal

(Crash 2)

Rainbow Road

(Super Mario Kart)

Bramble Blast

(Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest)

Jungle

(Sonic 1 [8-bit])

Frozen Altars

(Spyro 3)

Weathering Heights

(Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex)

Sky Base 2

(Sonic 1 [8-bit])

Orient Express

(Crash 3)

Underground

(Robocop vs The Terminator)

Factory

(The Terminator [for the Megadrive/Genesis])

Papu Papu

(Crash 1)

Idol Springs/Fracture Hills

(Spyro 2)

Tilt Panic/Ring Ding

(Crash Bash)

But this one, "Bramble Blast" is easily one of the best pieces of music I have ever actually heard. It's one of the very few tracks I've ever heard that has induced real tears (no rly).

Off the top of my head, I can only think of two other tracks that have ever made me cry: Aphex Twin - [lichen] and Boards of Canada - Hiscores (the Old Tunes vol. 2 version).

the 2 above games are like burned into my brain, everything about them the aesthetics, graphics music gameplay level structure.

and i can't believe i only noticed last year that the game box covers for each one are like identical looking,

The Eel Deal

(Crash 2)

omg yes was that the industrial-ish one? i made a cover of that on keyboard and recorded it to cassette when i was like 14, loved it

the equivalent levels in crash one have banging music that reminds me of Crash & Carry by Orbital and shit

i think video games are what got me into electronic music.

there's a lot of small indie games these days with very refreshing soundtracks in them. Osmos has a lovely ambient soundtrack that meshes quite well with the game, and you control the flow of time in the game, changing the pitch+speed of the music with it.. simple but kind of neat

for the mainstream titles deus ex is probably my all time favorite.. after that in no particular order contra 3 (love the rhythms in this one), castlevania, chrono trigger, half-life 2, sonic 2, bits of final fantasy vii, mirror's edge (the ambient tracks, not the action tracks)..
