Facebook Brings Facial Recognition to Photo Tagging

Facebook Photos, one of the social network’s most popular features, is getting a big and potentially controversial upgrade with a new feature that automatically suggests who users should tag in photos based on facial recognition technology.

The new feature, Tag Suggestions, will begin rolling out to U.S. users next week, according to Facebook Vice President of Product Chris Cox. He told us that the product utilizes technology that was built in-house, as well as some technology that came from partners. Cox did not disclose the partners Facebook worked with for Tag Suggestions, although we have our suspicions.

Tag Suggestions is fairly straightforward. Whenever you’re offered the chance to tag groups of your friends in an album, Facebook will utilize its facial recognition technology to group similar faces together and automatically suggest the friend you should tag them with. As you can see in the screenshot below, Facebook fills in the “Who is this?” box with its suggestion — all you have to do is click the “Save Tags” button to accept.

On the flipside think how amazing it's going to be for future generations when they search for info on their great grandparents. I'm sure it wont be long when software will be able to drill through every frame of every video on youtube and find people you know. The amount of shit people are going to be able to dig up in 30 years time about their parents/grandparents will be incredible.

eeek so they are going to have this without some sort of 'authorize this tag' before actually viewing it. I've already had like 2 pictures of me smoking a spliff appear on facebook without me really wanting them to

then stop engaging in illegal activity you commie.

wahh wahh waaah facebook privacy oh no

i can't wait until we have 'personwiki' - a site that collects all publically viewable (ie. via social networking sites, bandcamp etc) information on a given person and displays it on one concise page. WITH facial recognition so you can take a photo of a pretty girl on the train and thus stalk her on facebook.

But it's far more interesting to shriek hysterically about Facebook Privacy, rather than applying a little common sense.

There was a story recently shouting FACEBOOK DISPLAYS YOUR MEDICAL RECORDS!!!! Turns out what the story actually referred to was the NHS' self-diagnosis website, NHS Direct, has Facebook "Like" buttons on it's pages - ie if you think you have genital warts, look up the symptoms on line, and decide to "Like" the NHS's info on genital warts, the page is linked to your Facebook page. So no, Facebook doesn't display your medical records, and quite frankly anyone moronic enough to "Like" an info page on their STI, deserves not only to be banned from accessing the internet (or any electronic equipment, for their own safety), but also the STI.

You can set tagged pictures to private. That's what I did so there will be no nasty surprises the day after a great party

I find people don't take as many photos anymore, facebook has sort of taken all the fun out of it. People only take photos for facebook, if you are living life in the real world it's not the done thing anymore

didn't apple have this in aperture a few versions ago?

it's in iphoto.

Yeah and it doesn't work for shit

But these damn Like buttons that have popped up on every damn place are annoying. It's easy to mistakenly click it and then the "HOT BESTIALITY XXX" page get posted on your Facebook.

You can make everything friends-only or private and then you only need to include only the people whom you want.

I'm still increasingly tempted to delete mine though. I regularly cull my 'friends' and only keep people that I see semi-regularly and/or maintain an interest in. I never have any more than 90+.

Unfortunately it's a very handy tool for socialising. It's a good way of linking to media that you think your friends will find interesting. And if you're best friends and/or family are on there it's a good way to keep them updated about your life if you think they should care. Yeah, I've Facebook'd people from real life, sometimes even before I've met them. :spiteful:

I need to do this. I've accepted requests from people I was at School with, but thinking about it - if I haven't spoken to you since 1994, have we really got a lot to talk about now?

Recently accepted a request from a girl who I went to School with, only to find my feed filled with her 5x daily status updates, all of which are either things she's found of the internet or some kind of status-generator and a worrying amount of comments about immigrants and Poles

Delete.

The next feature we need is racial recognition.

lol.

this reminds me of the microsoft face-recognition software that came out last year. though apparently it had been rigorously tested, when it rolled out people discovered it did not recognise black people as humans.
