that actress album should have been called 'attempts'

zing!

also yeah, caves of paradise is good, but overall I agree with the sentiment that RIP doesn't really go anywhere, and a lot of tracks are way too long for just having one rather uninteresting element repeating over and over...

on the other hand though, I don't really think Photodementia or any of the other albums in the lineup deserve the historic title of being "album of the year" either... I guess 2012 was just kind of underwhelming after Room(s) and An Empty Bliss Beyond This World blew me away in 2012.

Still sticking with my early 2012 favorites Hipcatch, and Patience (After Sebald), because I immersed myself so deeply in them when they came out, in a hazy, unique time in my life.

I thought room(s) came out in 2011. Machinedrum - Room(s) right?

it is to this day the only album I have experienced full synesthesia with. and yes, 2011 was awesome. I'm really hoping that 2013 will be as good.

what is synesthesia like? Can you describe your experience?

Well, basically, when I had my eyes closed, and I concentrated hard on the music and my mind's eye, I saw the different elements of the tracks represented as different shapes, moving in relation to their timbre and their panning, with each having a different color, or sometimes as different shades of the same color. It's very hard to explain, especially out of that state of mind, but for example, with She Died There, the whole track was represented in different shades of pale blue light, with the rhythm as sharp flashes of light, the paddy stabs coming as waves of a more faded, deeper blue washing in from the left and right sides simultaneously, the bass as a kind of all encompassing pulsing, the sparky ambience coming from the center, constantly advancing towards me, then becoming wavy lines on top of everything as the sound got brighter... The vocals are especially hard to explain, as their shape changed with every chopped up syllable, evolving over time, telling a kind of visual story.

I do not have synesthesia with nearly the same kind of depth or frequency as a lot of people. that experience was kind of a unique situation, I was very high, when smoking weed by myself was relatively new to me, I had the music very loud on headphones, and I was tapping the rhythms on my temples with my fingers, which put me into kind of a trance like state. Music almost always induced closed eye visuals for me at that time period in my life, they just weren't usually such perfect manifestations of the elements of the music.

err yeah

that was a typo. I meant, after those albums blew me away in 2011

2011 was a pretty cool year. Much better than 2012 imo

absolutely. 2011 had room(s) and welcome by dave monolith, the only album to which i can see through the sun.

2012 was a bad year, one of the best records (mental union) was in fact a rerelease of a 2010 album with some bonus track.

the greatest stuff in 2012 for me was that i discovered mark fell. the sensate focus EPs are sublime stuff.

also, i cant understand the love for actress, there's nothing remarkable in it, a really forgettable release.

my votes: mental union, all the EOD/CN stuff, steel erector, ufabulum, galaxy gardens.

purchased Rip after the initial watmm hype, not heard any of his previous work. Average album at best; agree that a lot of the tracks are overly long and do not go anywhere with very little variation on the initial theme. Well put together mind and some nice ideas, but album of the year?

Mr 76ix's is so much better in terms of wealth of ideas, production and freshness.

Really cant decide on my album of the year though...

I think i might get a less vivid version of that whenever i smoke weed and listen to music. I can almost envision the notes written out or how some sounds fade in and out and produce different shapes in your head. No color for me tho, more of an idea of something that could be there. Room(s) is really growing on my now, i feel like it would be a great album to listen to while stoned

Did this ever get resolved? I don't remember seeing an outright winner.

2013 is already gonna be a very difficult one to call though.

Ae / BOC / MBV / Ceephax already in the mix....

Yea, I thought this would get break down like a tournament style elimination thing (like most IDM).

I guess everyone just figured Photodementia would win so no one cared.

I just figured after a while it was pretty clear that Actress was the winner and Photodementia was 2nd. There was going to be a runoff when it was closer but Actress just pulled right ahead, so there it's official

WATMM 2012 Album of the Year is: Actress - R.I.P

With the runner up: Photodementia - Fig. 03

3rd: Lone - Galaxy Garden

4th: Squarepusher - Ufabulum

...if you needed something official.
