new uk drinking guidelines include - several free booze days a week

A good way to reduce alcohol intake is to have several alcohol free days a week.

so ok, that means no drinking whatsoever? lol

I'm trying to cut down significantly this year. I did an intermittent fasting thing for a few years a while back, and this involved zero booze four days a week, so it's certainly doable.

I'd take the current recommendations with a pinch of salt though, I've not looked into it in detail yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if they're making lots of assumptions about the linearity of the health response to alcohol (i.e. taking a broad view of the epidemiological cancer rates, combining that with data relating to alcohol consumption - which is going to be pretty noisy data, and just assuming that alcohol rates correlate linearly with the cancer rates - this may be true to some degree, but no guarantee it would be true all the way down), but I could be wrong.

Also, I'm drinking well above these rates anyway, so I'm fucked regardless. heh.

yeah im also ignoring it & well above the stated rates & more along on the spanish rates (35 units) if following any unit rate system, although having a small break at the mo, but its a bit silly saying several free days in a 7 day week

After years of drinking everyday I stopped monday to thursday. Sometimes if it's melting hot or it's holiday time I'll have a few, but pretty much I go dry. The effect was wonderful. A revelation. I now really really look forward and appreciate my drinking on the weekend, and don't go over the top with it (well not much)

Drinking everyday is not great for you. I think maybe until you hit your thirties, it's okay and if you keep fit not a problem. Then I dunno it seems to take on a different vibe.

yep, definitely makes a difference the further you are from thirty. the biggest problem for me is getting up in the morning, I work from home so it's easy to lie in if I've had a bottle of wine the night before.

I'd also say drinking by yourself isn't so great the further you are from thirty. That's something to be aware of. Then again sitting down the boozer every night of the week with your misfit alcoholic family is a bit sad too (I've done both lol).

You know when something isn't good for you, so you can carry on for a while, but sooner or later you have to do what's right. I really love my drink (not just getting drunk, but love tasty vintage beer, wine and cider) and I didn't want to loose that.

What was funny, I once went to a Alcoholics Anonymous meeting at my local church. Hah, fuck, just makes me laugh looking back. So I'm convinced that I've got this massive drink problem (which was really just a stupid habit). It was one of the best things I ever did 'cause after meeting with these characters and sitting through the session I quickly realize that these people are in a whole different league to me. One sniff of wine and they are fucking full moon werewolf, tasmanian devil mode. It was funny but tragic, and I didn't sit too well with the creepy religious overtones of the whole thing. Anyway cutting to the chase, I'm glad I went, I actually went straight down my local and celebrated with a pint 'cause it was enlightening to know I wasn't a total fucking booze maniac like those weirdos back at the church

An additional recommendation is not to ‘save up’ the 14 units for 1 or 2 days, but to spread them over 3 or more days. People who have 1 or 2 heavy drinking sessions each week increase the risk of death from long term illnesses, accidents and injuries. A good way to reduce alcohol intake is to have several alcohol free days a week.

this paragraph makes no sense. "spread your drinking over 3 or more days. wait, actually have several alcohol free days."

If the idea of going one day without booze is a major problem to you, you might have a major problem

Never drink, never toke.

Only drink clean water and inhale fresh air.

I do this and can report significant side-effects: no friends, no social life, everyone rants against you for being a 'goody two shoes' leading to less friends.

Although I would be happy to have a social life if it didn't involve going to the pub.

Of course, do what the heck you want. Your life, live it free. If you're happy, who cares?

You take the good with the bad. With clean water in the tap, everything will ultimately be all right.

Tap water isn't clean, in my experience, fluoride, chlorine, residues from the pipes, gah, nasty stuff.

I don't have a social life so started not drinking just to fit in.

I don't usually drink on week days, unless there's something on.

But when you're into your drinking there is always something on. Thats whats feeds that figment of imagination.
