Hopefully number of dead is lower than 50. Two senseless attacks during Ramadan, tragic.

I didn't know this until the attack reports but apparently Turkey has two security checkpoints, as do many Middle Eastern airports, so it would be like someone bombing not just the terminal/facility but also the outer perimeter, which was attacked. I can't think of any stateside airports like that.

Having a sort of front door security check to the whole airport building is pretty common in Asia? I think I've seen it in a few places but Thailand's Chiang Mai airport comes to mind just now.

A very good friend flew had to change plane in Istanbul, he arrived there last night, right after the bombing. According to him, the Turkish media kept it completely silent. He was absolutely clueless about what was going on until after about 3 hours later, when he found out his other flight was cancelled and he started hearing rumours. He was stuck there for the entire night / morning and just sent us the message he "regretted" chosing for Turkish Airlines once again, leaving all of us worried about his situation.

Doesn't look like the fatalities have gone up thankfully, huge number of injured though.

No way will Turkey be able to have an effective response to this unless they sort out the Kurdish situation, even temporarily.

Well I gather this is equivalent to passing through security entering the greater perimeter then going through it as you get into the actual airport, as if it was an air base or military facility. For example in Baghdad International that means the 1st checkpoint is miles and miles from the 2nd one. It would be like going through a TSA checkpoint before you got to an airports entrance, parking areas, drop off points, etc.
