not ancillary jobs like roadie, sound man etc

i know 3 or 4

2 of which are affiliated with SONY and 2 that are free jazz maniacs

the 2 jazz guys are gigging constantly and are surviving not thriving and are in their late 50s early 60s

One. A guitarist in a covers band or two. Late 30s, seems to be doing ok. I live in a shit tip bumhole so he's lucky to be doing something enjoyable here.

One person.

He makes half his money making dance tunes and selling them to labels one 12" at a time and makes the other half of his money DJing every weekend ever. Dude's had one weekend off in the last decade!

I know one full time DJ who I went to uni with. He DJ's for Propaganda so basically tours the country during the week hitting different students unions / Academy venues. He loves his job, but I imagine its rather tiring.

I know a number of "part-time" DJs who get regular weekend gigs / release their own tunes, but all of them have other jobs too.

I know a lot of people who make money in cover bands, a few people who work in a recording studio, & one or two that do music for advertising (not sure how many of them make a living off of it). I don't know anyone offline making any money doing electronic music, commissioned or otherwise.

about five

a duo that do a shitty but scaringly succesful electro show, one dj-duo and one producer/dj.

many more djs/producers from berlin but "knowing" would be an overstatement. all part of the (local) techno/minimal scene

Oh, actually. I know one of the guys in "the blizzard" which is a rather successful trance-duo I think.

takes like an hour or 2 to knoack a track like that together

horrible unimaginative and trite

hard to believe anyone buys this stuff

most of the people i know who make music and make a living involving music do other things on the side like mastering, or small 30 second bits for commercials, sound effects for game, etc. I don't know anyone who makes a consistent living off of making music in the traditional sense (meaning these are the tracks i normally would naturally be making and i'm getting paid doing it). PRobably the closest thing to this is musicians i know who make money off of Djing, but barely any off of their actual music.

I don't know how really, but ive got a lot of mates from school who've ended up as musicians

My best mate at school is the guitarist in the horrors

I know the guy in Get Cape Wear Cape Fly, but am mates with his band more.

I know a Defected DJ who earns more of a living doing A&R for them.

I also know a few session musicians who have toured with bands but needed normal jobs in the mean time

Yeah, DJ Freestyle/Colin Russell. discogs link

He makes House exclusively so I didn't think any of you guys would know him. But he's released on the most respected House labels in the world and makes a decent quid off it. Done a lot of touring but he doesn't want to do that anymore. He's actually thinking of retiring from clubs entirely and just making tracks while doing some "normal" job because he's tired of the pretentious fucktards that go to the clubs to be seen rather than dance.

i was gonna say two but it's really only one. the one who does legitimately live off his music only does so because he makes really shitty music for the background in commercials. so he's not really living the dream, as it were. the other one i was GOING to say was Matt Florence, who played guitar in Naked Aggression for a while and is now in a band called The Jaggernauts (post punk/power pop outfit who do a killer cover of "No Quarter") but then i remembered the only reason he's able to do nothing but play in bands is because he's native american and gets casino money.

oh and i went to high school with a bunch of guys in semi-popular midwest emo/screamo scene bands. they were able to go without day jobs for a while but not so much anymore. actually my favorite out of them, forstella ford, ended up pretty deep in debt.

I forgot that I went to uni with Gareth Emery (GTR) - he made no .9 in the DJ Mag poll last year which is crazy. He was making awesome proggy trance tracks circa 2003 but ive not heard much of his recent stuff - but its obviously popular. He has been signed to Armin van buuren's Armada label.

Also, a few years above us at uni was DJ Yoda. :emotawesomepm9:

ALSO forgot about a guy I went to secondary school with who runs this record label who release some brilliant drum and bass - check out their podcasts if your interested. He also DJs regular techno nights. Dont know if he has another job too but DSM keeps him busy.

So actually, thats 3 people I know.
