Coil - Time Machines 2

Recommended Posts

TM2 will be (finally) manifesting soon. Within months…

All the remaining members of Coil and the executors of Jhonn and Peter’s estates are currently in discussion about how Coil things will progress. News will be posted here first.
Happy Lunar New Year.
T.H.

does that mean there could be a future for Coil ?

maybe 10 years ago I shot off an email to balance and he responded that they were currently recording TM2. I always assumed that ANS was the result. It seems fitting that Coil still releases music as a ghost.

certainly not, considering jhonn & sleazy being kinda dead. guess it's more about reissues, unreleased archive material etc

Hmm ok, never been familiar with the history of Coil except this accident of John Balance. Well their discography is already pretty big anyway

Past collaborators, Thighpaulsandra (the one guy in the last line-up that's still alive yeah), Danny Hyde, Stephen Thrower? I think they'll probably have loads and loads of amazing unreleased stuff. Bring it on, the first Time Machines is a bizarre trip every time.

none of the core members of Coil are living. The collaborators that are still living only worked with them during certain eras of their material. I met a weird guy up in Northern California who claims he made Time MAchine 2 entirely with Peter Christopherson. He was trying to sell a single CDr copy of it on discogs for like $5,000 and carefully worded it so it didn't have the name Coil or Peter chrisopherson on it. He took down the listing eventually. the whole experience was really strange, it sounded like a complete lie but i know for a fact he did at one time communicate with Peter christopherson and ended up buying used gear from him, which he tried to pass on craigslist after PC died for huge markups.

i have a casinotone i bought from peter! would never dream of selling it. i remember after jhonn died a bunch of coil gear was auctioned and i was surprised at how low some of it sold for. i'll never forgive myself from passing on their mono/poly.

Would it be possible to put up some short samples on the site while we wait?

So where does one Coil beginner start? I believe I'm specifically asking what the must haves are. I already want the How to Destroy Angels 12". Felt that quite a bit. Highly regarded singles and albums. Some things w/ real representative flavor.

Musick to play in the dark volume 1 and 2, for sure

I only got into Coil in past couple of years they had been someone I ment to check out for ages but only did when Sleazy died :( they are fucking awesome so much to explore. I started with Love secret Domain is 1 of their best and prob the most accessible. Agree on Musick to play in the Dark tho. My other faves are Black light District: A thousand Lights... And The Ape of Naples (tho get the impression that that's not a lot of people fav so mayhap not a good place to start!)

Worship the glitch is pretty essential as well IMO

Is pretty hard to be Representative as the covered so much ground but its all worth exploring tho still a few ones I aint got yet either. Truly a unique amazing Band... Enjoy!

I viewed my exploration of Coil's music as I did with Autechre: chronologically. I just listened to Scatology and Horse Rotorvator for years, all the while discovering Throbbing Gristle at the same time. Then it made sense to me and I got to the ambient albums, Music To Play In The Dark and Worship The Glitch. Astral Disaster and MTPITD Vol. 2 are probably my favourite.

It never clicked with me and Love's Secret Domain until recently (actually, when Autechre played some tracks of it on their radioshow for Exai). I always liked Stolen And Contaminated Songs better (Nasa-Arab, Who'll fall, how are these B-sides?!).

There is no negative word about Coil's music nor their appearance, but that firstly posted note of the estate executors made me thinking. I asked a couple of people who are a bit close to the original Coil circle and the big problem is, that the estate managers are not really interested into reissuing or releasing stuff under that tag.

Since Jhonn and Peter died, the market with records is swamped but on a very high level of marketing, i.e. for way too much money. I'm not speaking of editions handpasted by Jhonn, but regular records as well.

The big problem I have is that the recent to be released TM2 album and the actual Coil/NIN remix 12inch have pricetags on such an outerworldly niveau, that I ask myself who gets paid after all. The estate managers? I wonder if Peter would allow such an incredible fucked up mess of money sharks on the name of Coil.

I pass on this and the remix EP and try to get them on a different way without the ridiculous price ranges.

This is no offense to those who support Coil- in no way. I am just a bit wondering about the practises shown by the estate handlers.

yeah all good points thorsten, i've also seen recently bootleg vinyl copies of Scatology, Horse Rotovator, Loves Secret Domain and i think Panic being sold at record stores lately. The prices were pretty average like $18 per full length, but it just feels a little dirty to me about who's making money on this stuff now, legit or bootleg
