Curb your Enthusiasm (Season 9!)

Seeing people get hyped for this has convinced me to try the show out. Should I start with Season 1, or is it one of those shows that gets good later on?

It started as a stand up special in 1999, and developed more as the years went on. One season was entirely focused on a Seinfeld reunion.

Definitely check out the first season at least, it's a great show in my opinion.. most of the dialogue is improvised/written on the spot

I've always wondered how the improv/on the spot thing worked in Curb.. like, how much of the story is pre-written/scripted? A lot of the timing seems far too good to be improvised.. but then again there are the times when you can see Larry start to laugh at how it's all unfolding..

ive seen behind the scenes bits where they say there is no script. the script is just plot outlines for scene by scene and dictate how the different characters will react .. etc. but actual line by line dialogue is not written. so they play that out + couple of takes if need be, then edit it together to form the scene.

also agreed that the more the show goes on the more it seems like an actual written sitcom. not sure if that's them starting to write dialogue or just getting better at the process. all the behind the scene bits suggest there is no written dialogue in the scripts though ....

i'm guessing certain scenes have dialogue written.. come think of it lol

MORE CURB.

was never completely in love with how season 8 ended.

even preferred season 7 ending over season 8 ending. that sort of, indefinite nature of how 7 ended with larry and cheryl getting into more mundane 'curb' style bullshit with cut to credits. :^) not that it really matters ... but it sort of does for me... for a good show to have a nice solid ending.

seasons 1-4 were classics, 5 had it's moments, 6 was pretty shit, 7 was a bit of a return to form (and I agree, would've made a great series finale), 8 was pretty crappy again. looking forward to it though despite the chance it might not be great, who knows, maybe he has some great ideas for it.

I just rewatched the entire series, and it really is gold all the way through. I disagree with people that said the show dipped in quality after season 4. Seasons 5 and 6 are incredible. The entire season 6 (with the blacks) was hysterical. Season 7 (seinfeld reunion) was also one of the greatest things ever. Season 8 was slightly worse than season 7 (how can anything top the seinfeld reunion?), but honestly, I'm so damn excited about another season of this show. If you don't think they're as good, watch them again and you'll see you remembered wrong.

Stoked!!

Start with the original standup special and watch them in order. It's comedy gold front to back and lots of inside jokes are referenced, so it's good to not skip any.

Also, I would recommend not watching more than one in a day. If you marathon/binge watch it, you fail to notice the nuance and take for granted how well constructed the story is.

And yeah, all the dialogue is unscripted, but the stories are very meticulously put together. Larry David said that it takes him much longer to make a curb than a Seinfeld ever did. The stories are actually quite elaborate...the number of jokes / real life concepts he squeezes/weaves together into a cohesive story is what makes the show so great.

The dialogue writes itself. Most of the actors say that's the easy part. They do several takes of each scene and edit together the funniest bits.

God I loved this show. Almost all the episodes were great. My eyes went wide when I saw that there will be a season 9.

Really hope they continue off from Season 8 where its just Leon and Larry fucking around in Paris to avoid attending Michael J Fox's parkinson's fundraiser.
