This is really fucking good. Absolutely lush . I had no idea who it was when I first heard it on Spotify but it turns out the composers are two veteran musicians who have been active since the 1980s.

Garry Hughes and Harvey Jones are two pioneering electronic music composers who first encountered each other in Birmingham England in the early 1980’s.

Garry has worked with artists as diverse as Bjork, Sly & Robbie, Killing Joke, The Art Of Noise and the Orchestral Pink Floyd project; he is also the co-founder of the popular Six Degrees act, Bombay Dub Orchestra. Harvey has collaborated with Julian Cope, Carla Bley & Chris Botti among many others.

Upon meeting, the two vintage synth fanatics swiftly realized they were both obsessed with synthesizers and that both were inspired to get into electronic music through the theme to the popular UK Television series, Doctor Who, a seminal piece of electronica, created by Delia Derbyshire of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. It’s an outstanding musical achievement that still sounds amazing to this day.

Of course, it was inevitable that one day the two in demand producers and players would sit down to record an album project together. Starting as a series of improvisations in Harvey’s Manhattan studios, the record moved back & forth between NY and Garry’s studio in Wales. The resulting collaboration is a contemplative, yet melodic record, free of beats and vocals, expressing the duo’s love of analog synths, Mellotron sounds and vintage studio effects. Beautifully evoking Garry & Harvey’s beloved 70’s era electronic ambient music, the debut of the Delia Derbyshire Appreciation Society is more than a fitting tribute to the spirit of the artist for which it is named.
